After repeatedly warning demonstrators they were in violation of the city\u2019s 8 p.m. curfew, officers cleared a crowd of several hundred people from Civic Center Park across from the courthouse by firing rubber bullets and letting off canisters of tear gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"teads_passback\">\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">As the crowd dispersed, some made their way south on Sheridan Road, where at least a dozen vehicles in a used car lot had been set ablaze during the two previous nights of violent demonstrations, looting and fires that burned at least 30 businesses in the city of 100,000 people. Across the street from the burned-out auto lot, men with guns protected the boarded-up Ultimate Gas Station, and videos posted to social media showed a confrontation between demonstrators and the armed men.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">At 11:48 p.m., shots rang out near the gas station. Police quickly cordoned off a one-block stretch of Sheridan Road. An officer used a megaphone to urge people to clear the area: \u201cWe have multiple people down. Clear the area. We don\u2019t want any more people shot. We have multiple shooters out here. Clear the area!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"desktop-nativo mobile-yieldmo inline-ad \" data-inline-ad-count=\"2\">\n<div id=\"fKJ5p01vSHWL8s\" class=\"wrapper clearfix full pb-feature pb-layout-item pb-f-ads-nativo\" data-pb-name=\"Nativo Ad\" data-pb-curated=\"curated\" data-pb-id=\"unnamed-feature\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Officials with the Kenosha Police Department and the Kenosha County Sheriff\u2019s Department confirmed they were investigating shootings near the gas station stemming from a confrontation with protesters. Kenosha police wrote in a statement that the victims have not yet been identified. Neither departments would say early Wednesday if anyone had been taken into custody.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Videos on Twitter appeared to show at least three victims. In <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FBGOnTheScene%2Fstatus%2F1298496272500916225&amp;data=02%7C01%7Ceakrol%40chicagotribune.com%7C594ee7e8063a4259191e08d849987c29%7Cf7da0482aed242fa80233b240fb6598d%7C0%7C0%7C637340266558652249&amp;sdata=EwzBhGndHqva0akVW29KRXh%2BNAQuvx7ebYUIUBIwzt4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">one graphic video<\/a>, a man with a rifle is shown getting run down by protesters in the middle of Sheridan Road and shooting at them from the ground. Another graphic video from The Daily Caller show people attending to a man shot in the parking lot of the gas station. The video shows a man removing his shirt to apply pressure to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dhookstead\/status\/1298548642916323330?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">victim\u2019s head wound<\/a> with two other people assisting nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/26\/us\/three-people-shot-one-fatally-on-third-night-of-unrest-in-kenosha-wis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">told the New York Times<\/a> three people had been shot, one fatally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"teads_passback\">\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ve had people saying, \u2018Why don\u2019t you deputize citizens?\u2019\u201d he told the Times. \u201cThis is why you don\u2019t deputize citizens with guns to protect Kenosha.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Devin Scott said he witnessed one of the shootings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe were all chanting \u2018Black lives matter\u2019 at the gas station and then we heard, boom, boom, and I told my friend, that\u2019s not fireworks,\u201d said Scott, 19, who lives in the Round Lake area. \u201cAnd then this guy with this huge gun runs by us in the middle of the street and people are yelling, \u2018He shot someone! He shot someone! And everyone is trying to fight the guy, chasing him and then he started shooting again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Scott said he hit the ground as the next round of shots went off and a man nearby was shot in the middle of the street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI was cradling him in my arms. I was trying to keep this kid alive and he wasn\u2019t moving or nothing. He was just laying there,\u201d a visibly shaken Scott said shortly after midnight. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do and then this woman starts performing CPR. There was no pulse. I don\u2019t think he made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The shootings took place after police and National Guard members dispersed protesters in the hours following an 8 p.m. curfew.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Protesters gathered by a newly installed fence surrounding the county courthouse and almost succeeded in tipping it over before police in riot gear streamed from the building. Some in the crowd fired heavy duty fireworks at the officers, who responded with high pitched blasts from a sound cannon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">At about 9:30 p.m., military-style heavy trucks pulled in front of the courthouse and released clouds of tear gas. As gas hung in the air in front of the courthouse, some members of the crowd attended to protesters suffering from its effects, pouring water in their faces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Police officers and National Guard members moved into the park, appearing to shoot canisters. The crowd cleared out of the park. With the park clear, there was a smaller standoff on Sheridan Road, a main north-south route through town. Some protesters threw rocks and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillRuthhart\/status\/1298467076449996800?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">shot fireworks<\/a>, while police responded with tear gas and flash bangs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">A little more than 100 demonstrators shouted \u201cBlack lives matter\u201d as officers ordered them off of the street and onto the sidewalk. As some in the crowd fled, they rolled dumpsters at armored vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The nighttime protest and chaos unfolded after Blake family attorney Benjamin Crump said at an afternoon news conference that it would take a \u201cmiracle\u201d for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/evanston\/ct-evr-jacob-blake-kenosha-police-shooting-evanston-tl-0827-20200824-h63o7uquo5esnf7lnv23njzrx4-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">29-year-old <\/a>to walk again after a Kenosha police officer\u2019s bullet severed Blake\u2019s spinal cord. The attorneys asked for a transparent investigation. Along with demanding charges against the cop who shot Blake, Crump said all the officers at the scene should be fired.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The attorneys and family members met a media throng in front of the Kenosha County Courthouse, which has been a focal point for protests over the shooting. As Crump spoke, a worker power-washed graffiti from the stone facade. A quintet of heavy trucks blocked nearby streets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\" data-page=\"2\">One of Blake\u2019s sisters, Letetra Wideman, listed the names of Black people killed by police in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is nothing new. I\u2019m not sad. I\u2019m not sorry. I\u2019m angry, and I\u2019m tired,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t want your pity. I want change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">People clashed with police and destroyed property both Sunday and Monday nights, and Blake\u2019s mother, Julia Jackson, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-nw-kenosha-wisconsin-police-riots-20200825-2sxleuyalvbnfdj7qmx6ajknte-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">destruction<\/a> she saw \u201cdoesn\u2019t reflect my son or my family.\u201d Jackson and the lawyers said Blake has been medicated and has little awareness of recent events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf Jacob knew what was going on as far as that goes, the violence and the destruction, he would be very unpleased, so I\u2019m really asking and encouraging everyone in Wisconsin and abroad to take a moment and examine your heart,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"interstitial_link\" data-interstitial=\"manual\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \"><span class=\"roadblock\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/evanston\/ct-evr-jacob-blake-kenosha-police-shooting-evanston-tl-0827-20200824-h63o7uquo5esnf7lnv23njzrx4-story.html#nt=interstitial-manual\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Blake, shot by police officer in Kenosha, part of Evanston family long associated with community activism \u00bb<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Blake\u2019s father, Jacob Blake Sr., wept bitterly during the news conference and at one point was led away from the group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\" data-item-type=\"depthscroll\" data-item-id=\"depth_scroll_middle\" data-item-number=\"middle\">\u201cThey shot my son seven times,\u201d he said through tears. \u201cLike he didn\u2019t matter. But my son matters. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/nation-world\/ct-nw-kenosha-wisconsin-police-shooting-20200824-3wu3bcfypffyznwx7esu4tutju-story.html\">summoned 125 National Guard members<\/a> to monitor the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Shortly after an 8 p.m. curfew, police announced over a loudspeaker that the gathering was an unlawful assembly. Some officers fired rounds of tear gas into the crowd, which retreated to the park across the street but did not disperse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Footage on social media and in news accounts indicated that people smashed cars and torched buildings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-nw-kenosha-wisconsin-police-riots-20200825-2sxleuyalvbnfdj7qmx6ajknte-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-nw-kenosha-wisconsin-police-riots-20200825-2sxleuyalvbnfdj7qmx6ajknte-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">ncluding a furniture store and a state probation and parole office<\/a>. A city block was cordoned off Tuesday so officials could survey damage and firefighters could put out smoldering fires. Several storefronts were badly damaged, including a computer store that had windows broken. It appeared merchandise was removed from the shelves. Smoke filled the air and visibility was low as firefighters used water cannons on the buildings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Evers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovEvers\/status\/1298324994343055360?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">decried the destruction in tweets Tuesday<\/a> and said his administration will be \u201cincreasing the presence of the Wisconsin National Guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian and County Executive Jim Kreuser issued a joint statement blaming outside agitators for the destruction, though they offered no evidence to back up the allegation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt is clear to us that this is no longer just a demonstration in reaction to Sunday\u2019s tragic events,\u201d Kreuser said in the statement. \u201cWe absolutely want to know the truth about what happened with Jacob Blake, but we have to let the investigatory process work. Destroying our city will not make that process go any faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Kenosha County authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenoshaCounty\/status\/1298335822979182593?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">announced the 8 p.m. curfew<\/a> would be in effect again Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Some were preparing for more destruction Tuesday evening. Downtown Kenosha, just east of the courthouse, was almost entirely boarded up. The words \u201ckids live upstairs\u201d were spray-painted on the wood covering a restaurant\u2019s windows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Court Burrell, owner of the Gold Standard Social Club tattoo parlor, said he slept in his shop the past two nights. He said friends had kept vandals away so far by telling them Burrell\u2019s shop is a Black-owned business, but he wasn\u2019t counting on his luck to hold.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe thing is, I might have a Black building, but someone else might not,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ll set a fire there, and fires don\u2019t care about color. Fire can jump from building to building.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Sunday\u2019s shooting was the latest to galvanize outraged demonstrators, who have spilled into the streets repeatedly in the three months since George Floyd died beneath the knee of a Minneapolis cop. Like other controversial uses of force, this one was captured on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenoshanews.com\/news\/local\/watch-now-state-doj-will-probe-officer-involved-shooting-man-in-serious-condition\/article_f1adbd13-3a15-5cdd-bd4e-95113ca36de4.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">a harrowing video shared online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The confrontation unfolded as police responded to a call of a domestic incident about 5 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/nation-world\/ct-nw-kenosha-police-body-cams-20200825-6c2w2tochnfwvfwqkmahbu3tsa-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">In the footage shared online<\/a>, Blake walks from the sidewalk around the front of an SUV to the driver-side door as officers follow him with their guns pointed. As Blake opens the door and leans into the SUV, an officer grabs his shirt from behind and appears to open fire while Blake has his back turned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Seven shots can be heard, though it isn\u2019t clear how many struck Blake or how many of the officers fired. During the shooting, a woman can be seen jumping up and down in the street as she screams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The three officers at the scene were placed on administrative leave, standard practice in shootings by police, while the Wisconsin Department of Justice investigates. Authorities did not disclose the identities of the officers involved or say whether they believed Blake was armed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">There will not be body camera footage to clarify what happened because Kenosha police don\u2019t have the devices. They\u2019re not expected to get body cameras until 2022, Antaramian said Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"interstitial_link\" data-interstitial=\"manual\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \"><span class=\"roadblock\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/nation-world\/ct-nw-kenosha-police-body-cams-20200825-6c2w2tochnfwvfwqkmahbu3tsa-story.html#nt=interstitial-manual\" target=\"_blank\">Kenosha unanimously approved body cameras for police in 2017. Years later, no one is wearing them. \u00bb<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Crump \u2014 who represents the families of several Black people killed by police in high-profile confrontations \u2014 appeared on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America\u201d a few hours before his news conference and alleged that Kenosha police had been the aggressors before Blake\u2019s shooting. He said no witnesses had suggested Blake was armed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe video shows what happened. He was walking away. He wasn\u2019t posing a threat to them or anything like that,\u201d Crump said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Crump has said three of Blake\u2019s sons \u2014 ages 3, 5 and 8 \u2014 were in the SUV when police shot their father. The shooting happened at a birthday party for one of the sons, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou can only imagine the psychological problems that these babies are gonna have for the rest of their life,\u201d Crump said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Blake\u2019s family has deep roots in Evanston, and hundreds of people rallied there Tuesday night near a housing development named for his late grandfather, also named Jacob Blake. The elder Blake was a pastor at Ebenezer AME Church in Evanston and a local leader in the civil rights movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">William Eason, friend of Blake\u2019s father, said, \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is show the family that we support them and their message.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"stop-here\">Bobby Burns, one of the rally\u2019s organizers, said, \u201cWe are under constant suspicion.
