Suddenly, one of the plane\u2019s engines went out.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body pagination-first\">\n<p>Panicking, he, the pilot and co-pilot lobbed loads of wire into the ocean in hopes of stabilizing the craft. Brooks remembers joking that if the pilot jumped, he\u2019d grab onto him. After all, the plane was only equipped with two parachutes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"desktopInArticle-0\" class=\"ad-slot article-slot-centered hidden-phone\" data-ad-settings=\"desktopInArticle-0\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_355=\"16009\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_355=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_355=\"1\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_362=\"16011\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_362=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_362=\"1\" data-ad-setup=\"true\" data-google-query-id=\"CPmDh_uTw-sCFZSdfgodT68FaQ\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a scary moment,\u201d he recounted in a 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PdpR__EwEGk\" target=\"_blank\">oral history interview<\/a>. \u201cBut we made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks survived that close call. Now, the 110-year-old is believed to be the United States\u2019 oldest living World War II veteran. And in just over two weeks, on Saturday, September 12, he\u2019ll turn 111.<\/p>\n<p>For the past five years, Brooks has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/events-programs\/events\/125512-110th-birthday-celebration-wwii-veteran-lawrence-brooks\" target=\"_blank\">celebrated<\/a> his birthday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National World War II Museum<\/a> in his home city of New Orleans. As Talia Lakritz reported for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/oldest-world-war-ii-veteran-age-birthday-2019-9\" target=\"_blank\">Insider<\/a> <\/em>last year, he was stationed mainly in New Guinea and the Philippines, working as a support worker and eventually achieving the rank of private first class.<\/p>\n<div id=\"desktopInArticle-1\" class=\"ad-slot article-slot-centered hidden-phone\" data-ad-settings=\"desktopInArticle\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_355=\"17287\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_355=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_355=\"1\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-309656_364=\"17290\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_364=\"17290\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_364=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_364=\"1\" data-ad-setup=\"true\" data-google-query-id=\"CIP854OUw-sCFVHBfgod_zQNwg\"><\/div>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/history\/2020\/05\/americas-oldest-living-wwii-veteran-faced-hostility-abroad-home\/#:~:text=At%20110%2C%20Lawrence%20Brooks%20is,U.S.%20Department%20of%20Veterans%20Affairs.\" target=\"_blank\">National Geographic<\/a><\/em><em>\u2019<\/em>s Chelsea Brasted notes that Brooks, who is black, served in a battalion predominately made up of African American soldiers. For a time, he even worked as a servant for three white officers.<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/why-african-american-soldiers-saw-world-war-ii-two-front-battle-180964616\/\">black soldiers<\/a> faced discrimination both at home and abroad. A particularly egregious example of racism within the military was the preferential treatment afforded to German prisoners of war, who were allowed to dine in restaurants across the Deep South even as African American soldiers were forced to eat out of sight in the kitchens, writes Matthew Taub for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5872361\/wwii-german-pows-civil-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to war with Hitler, the world\u2019s most horrible racist, and we did so with a segregated army because, despite guarantees of equal treatment, this was still Jim Crow America,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/contributors\/robert-citino\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Citino<\/a>, a senior historian at the WWII Museum, tells <em>National Geographic<\/em>. \u201cAfrican Americans were still subject to all kinds of limitations and discrimination based on the color of their skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PdpR__EwEGk\" width=\"854\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Brooks\u2019 time in the Army drew to a close in 1945\u2014a full three years before President Harry S. Truman officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/retropolis\/wp\/2018\/07\/26\/how-harry-s-truman-went-from-being-a-racist-to-desegregating-the-military\/\" target=\"_blank\">desegregated the U.S. military<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"desktopInArticle-2\" class=\"ad-slot article-slot-centered hidden-phone\" data-ad-settings=\"desktopInArticle\" data-ad-setup=\"true\" data-google-query-id=\"CJihz5SUw-sCFVDYfgodNfcJ8w\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_355=\"54275\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_355=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_355=\"1\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-309656_365=\"54278\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-309656_365=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-309656_365=\"1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI had some good times and I had some bad times,\u201d Brooks tells <em>National Geographic<\/em>. \u201cI just tried to put all the good ones and the bad ones together and tried to forget about all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Brooks worked as a forklift operator. He retired in his 70s and now lives with his daughter and caretaker, Vanessa Brooks, in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans. He enjoys doting on his 5 children, 5 step-children, 13 grandchildren and more than 20 great-grandchildren, per Ryan Prior and Lauren M. Johnson of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/12\/us\/oldest-world-war-ii-veteran-birthday-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks\u2019 wife, Leona, died in 2005 following the couple\u2019s evacuation by helicopter during Hurricane Katrina. The storm \u201ctook everything I owned, washed away everything,\u201d he later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/life\/heartwarming\/oldest-living-american-wwii-veteran-celebrates-his-110th-birthday\/83-0a6f77b3-d281-48cb-8c8b-183cd9b350b5\" target=\"_blank\">reflected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/war\/wwii-veteran-statistics\" target=\"_blank\">389,292<\/a> of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II were still alive in September 2019.
