Accusations of Disney bowing to the Chinese Communist Party emerged when the trailer was released.<\/p>\n<div data-v-59ed02ba=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<div data-v-59ed02ba=\"\">\n<div data-v-59ed02ba=\"\">\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Many were outraged to learn the movie was partially filmed in\u00a0<span class=\"text\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/united-states-canada\/article\/3100763\/calls-boycott-disneys-mulan-grow-over-scenes-filmed\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\">Xinjiang<\/a><\/span>, where at least 1 million Uygurs have been forced into internment camps. They also objected to actress Liu Yifei\u2019s reported\u00a0<span class=\"text\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/article\/3023061\/disneys-mulan-faces-boycott-calls-after-star-crystal-liu\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\">support of the Hong Kong police<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>during the 2019\u00a0<span class=\"text\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\"><a class=\"link-text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/hong-kong-protests\" data-v-5f87d536=\"\">protests<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Criticisms of the movie include its historical and geographical inaccuracies, an undertone of Islamophobia, and a misrepresentation of chi (life force).<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Also concerning, but less visible, is how Disney\u2019s <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">Mulan<\/em> is a more conservative telling of an ancient story \u2013 and the place of women \u2013 than some historical Chinese renditions. The dutiful heroine, Hua Mulan, cross-dresses as a man to take her father\u2019s place in the army. She returns victorious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">The original ballad, <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">Mulan shi<\/em> (\u201c<em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">The Ballad of Mulan<\/em>\u201d), dates back to the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), a period of warfare and instability. Readers of this poem are exposed to the painful emotions that surround Mulan\u2019s decision to go to war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">In early renditions, Mulan was a Northerner of unspecified ethnicity, and some retellings cast her as a resistor to the imperial court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Scholars have likened Mulan to a blank canvas. The freedom to tell her story in different ways has contributed to its popularity. By the 20th century, the ethnicity of this female warrior was designated as Han, and her loyalty allied with the central government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">In <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">Mulan Joins the Army<\/em> (1939), Mulan\u2019s filial piety was emphasised as a service to the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Similar themes were explored in <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">Lady General Hua Mu-lan<\/em> (1964) and <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\">Mulan: Rise of a Warrior<\/em> (2009). This masculine power has no place in a girl\u2019s life. The only way she can honour her family is through marriage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">However, Mulan ultimately brings honour to her family by demonstrating that she is \u201cloyal, brave and true\u201d \u2013 qualities engraved on her father\u2019s sword. Mulan knows her crippled father will die in battle if he is conscripted into the army. In addition to the three qualities, the new sword is engraved with a fourth virtue, xiao (\u201cfilial piety\u201d, translated in the film as \u201cdevotion to family\u201d). The men urge her to reconsider the Emperor\u2019s offer and join the guard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">The film ends with the phoenix, Mulan\u2019s ancestral guardian, circling above her. This creature has been her guide and its reappearance signals her acceptance of the offer. Photo: Disney Enterprises\/TNS<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<h4 class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--h4 content--h4\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">A 17th century band of sisters<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Within the film, the villain Xianniang (Gong Li) provides a powerful contrast to Mulan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Xianniang invites Mulan to join forces and rebel against the Emperor. She wants to build a kingdom where strong women are accepted for who they are, but Mulan responds, \u201cI know my place\u201d \u2013 emphasising her duty is to serve her Emperor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-21a2259e=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-6ef17992=\"\" data-v-21a2259e=\"\">Ultimately, Xianniang sacrifices herself to save Mulan. In a version by the 17th century author Chu Renhuo, set at the end of the Sui dynasty (581-618), Xianniang is a warrior princess who becomes Mulan\u2019s sworn sister. They lead a group of women soldiers and travel together.
