{"id":10899,"date":"2020-10-06T23:02:28","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T06:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=10899"},"modified":"2020-10-07T07:51:24","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T14:51:24","slug":"post3-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=10899","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;\u2018An embarrassment\u2019: Trump tweet angers pandemic survivors&#8221;, Associated Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Gene Johnson and Peter Prengaman, October 6, 2020<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">SEATTLE (AP) \u2014 Dizzy with a soaring fever and unable to breathe, Scott Sedlacek had one thing going for him: He was among the first people to be treated for COVID-19 at Seattle\u2019s Swedish Medical Center, and the doctors and nurses were able to give him plenty of attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">The 64-year-old recovered after being treated with a bronchial nebulizer in March, but the ensuing months have done little to dull the trauma of his illness. Hearing of President Donald Trump\u2019s advice by tweet and video on Monday not to fear the disease \u2014 as well as the president\u2019s insistence on riding in a motorcade outside Walter Reed Medical Center and returning to the White House while still infectious \u2014 enraged him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cI\u2019m so glad that he appears to be doing well, that he has doctors who can give him experimental drugs that aren\u2019t available to the masses,\u201d Sedlacek said. \u201cFor the rest of us, who are trying to protect ourselves, that behavior is an embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"relatedStory-0-2-157 Component-block-0-2-52\">\n<div class=\"intro-0-2-158\">MORE ON TRUMP AND THE VIRUS:<\/div>\n<ul class=\"list-0-2-159\">\n<li class=\"relatedStory-0-2-160\"><a class=\"link-0-2-161\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/a037f5cf6d6f14f90313a3aa7cd58043\">\u2013 Trump reports &#8216;no symptoms,&#8217; returns to downplaying virus<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"relatedStory-0-2-160\"><a class=\"link-0-2-161\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-archive-efdb363953cc5e2d64028b60baabdc90\">\u2013 FDA publishes vaccine guidelines opposed by White House<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"relatedStory-0-2-160\"><a class=\"link-0-2-161\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/virus-outbreak-public-health-archive-7b4f5219e5c33315a49bc087b164b185\">\u2013 How do I politely ask someone to wear a mask?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">COVID-19 has infected about 7.5 million Americans, leaving more than 210,000 dead and millions more unemployed, including Sedlacek. The U.S. has less than 5% of the globe\u2019s population but more than 20% of the reported deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Yet the world\u2019s highest-profile coronavirus patient tweeted on Monday, as he was due to be released from the hospital following a three-day stay: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid of Covid. Don\u2019t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs &amp; knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">He reiterated the message in a video Monday night, saying \u201cBe careful,\u201d but \u201cdon\u2019t let it dominate you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to beat it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have the best medical equipment, we have the best medicines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">The advice fit in with Trump\u2019s downplaying of the virus, his ridiculing of those who wear masks to protect themselves and others, and his insistence on holding rallies and White House events in contravention of federal guidelines. But emergency room doctors, public health experts, survivors of the disease and those who have lost loved ones were nevertheless aghast, saying his cavalier words were especially dangerous at a time when infections are on the rise in many places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Marc Papaj, a Seneca Nation member who lives in Orchard Park, New York, lost his mother, grandmother and aunt to COVID-19. He was finding it tough to follow the president\u2019s advice not to let the virus \u201cdominate your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cThe loss of my dearest family members will forever dominate my life in every way for all of my days,\u201d Papaj said, adding this about Trump: \u201cHe does not care about any of us \u2014 he\u2019s feeling good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Dr. Tien Vo, who has administered more than 40,000 coronavirus tests at his clinics in California\u2019s Imperial County, had this to say: \u201cOh, my Lord. That\u2019s a very bad recommendation from the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"afs:Content:9503163246\" class=\"Component-hubLink-0-2-53\" data-key=\"hub-link-embed\"><span class=\"title-0-2-155\">Full Coverage:\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"link-0-2-156 overrideArticle\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/tag\/VirusOutbreak\">Virus Outbreak<\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">The county is a farming region along the Mexican border that, at one point, had California\u2019s highest infection rate. Its 180,000 residents are largely Latino and low-income, groups that have suffered disproportionately from the virus. Cases overwhelmed its two hospitals in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cThe president has access to the best medical care in the world, along with a helicopter to transport him to the hospital as needed,\u201d Dr. Janet Baseman, an epidemiologist at the University of Washington\u2019s School of Public Health, wrote in an email. \u201cThe rest of us who don\u2019t have such ready access to care should continue to worry about covid, which has killed a million people around the world in just a handful of months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">To Carla Dundes, whose mother died of the coronavirus in a nursing home in April, the dichotomy was striking between a 94-year-old dying all alone and a powerful man, surrounded by the best medical care, trying to use the virus to his benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cHe was deliberately careless but my mom was helpless,\u201d said Dundes, a retired 66-year-old from Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. \u201cTo have him try to spin this as if he\u2019s been heroic, that\u2019s just shameful and I think it\u2019s heartless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Some of Trump\u2019s supporters said they wouldn\u2019t be swayed by the White House outbreak: Wearing a mask is a choice, and to mandate its use limits freedom, said Melissa Blundo, chairwoman of the \u201cNo Mask Nevada\u201d PAC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cI\u2019m not saying the coronavirus isn\u2019t real. I\u2019m not saying that it isn\u2019t a pandemic,\u201d she said. \u201cI believe tuberculosis could be called a pandemic when it kills a person every 21 seconds, but we haven\u2019t shut down the entire world. I just find it interesting that we are taking this particular pandemic and shutting down economies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control show 8,920 cases of tuberculosis in 2019. In 2017, the most recent year it reported deaths, 515 died from the bacterial lung infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">Candy Boyd, the owner of Boyd Funeral Home in Los Angeles, which serves many Black families, said Trump\u2019s comments were infuriating and an \u201cexample of him not living in reality.\u201d The funeral home receives fewer virus victims now than it did in the spring, when it was several a day, but people continue to die, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-56 Component-p-0-2-47\">\u201cWe have people dying and this is a joke to him,\u201d Boyd said. \u201cI don\u2019t take that lightly.
