Ten House Republicans voted to impeach Trump alongside their Democratic colleagues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"desktop-nativo mobile-yieldmo inline-ad \" data-inline-ad-count=\"2\">\n<div id=\"fO5huw1e9t3rms\" class=\"wrapper clearfix pb-curated full pb-feature pb-layout-item pb-f-ads-nativo\" data-pb-name=\"Nativo Ad\" data-pb-curated=\"curated\" data-pb-id=\"unnamed-feature\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/politics\/bs-pr-pol-maryland-republicans-20210115-obcvkj6nkfdlnpqmlqwiqiwcva-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">president has been charged with inciting insurrection<\/a>against the U.S. government after his supporters raided the U.S. Capitol building Jan. 6, threatening members of Congress as they attempted to certify the presidential election results in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Five people died in the insurrection \u2014 one Trump supporter who was shot by law enforcement after breaching an area near the House of Representatives chamber, one police officer and three others who suffered medical emergencies during the chaos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cnx-ad-container cnx-full-height\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"teads_passback\">\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">House leaders haven\u2019t yet brought the impeachment charges to the Senate, where a trial would be held. That\u2019s partially because the Senate won\u2019t come back into session until Tuesday, the day before Biden\u2019s inauguration. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to bring the Senate back earlier for an emergency session to consider the charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Senate has not been in session and so the speaker is organizing the formal transfer of the articles,\u201d said Raskin, referring to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. \u201cIt should be coming up soon. I know the speaker also considers the president a clear and present danger to the republic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"interstitial_link\" data-interstitial=\"manual\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \"><span class=\"roadblock\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/politics\/bs-md-pol-tommy-ruskin-death-20210105-napqncfxb5ayjigyd6mjy36qay-story.html#nt=interstitial-manual\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Raskin remembered in tribute for \u2018perfect\u2019 heart and soul \u00bb<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">After the inauguration, though, Democrats will take control of the Senate, with new Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over the chamber. That will allow them to exert more control over the proceedings. In last year\u2019s impeachment trial, for instance, Republican leadership didn\u2019t allow witnesses to be called.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cObviously, we\u2019re not going to be able to tell everyone\u2019s story, but we\u2019re going to be able to tell the story of this attack on America and all of the events that led up to it,\u201d Raskin said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\" data-item-type=\"depthscroll\" data-item-id=\"depth_scroll_middle\" data-item-number=\"middle\">That story will include mention of Trump\u2019s repeated attempts to cast doubt on the election results before the January riot. The president\u2019s legal team pursued numerous challenges to the election but failed to prove any fraud altered the results. Meanwhile, Trump took bemoaned a \u201cstolen\u201d election on social media and encourages his followers to flock to D.C. on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"interstitial_link\" data-interstitial=\"manual\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \"><span class=\"roadblock\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/nation-world\/ct-nw-mcconnell-senate-impeachment-trial-20210114-3ck5cw2upvcelorfzjefkivk7e-story.html#nt=interstitial-manual\" target=\"_blank\">McConnell open to convicting Trump, but blocks quick impeachment trial \u00bb<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Trump also attempted to pressure officials in key states in hopes of overturning Biden\u2019s victory. In a Jan. 2 call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, for instance, Trump urged him to \u201cfind\u201d enough votes to award him the state\u2019s Electoral College votes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe fact that it was deliberated and planned and premeditated underscores the leadership and the complicity of Donald Trump in all of these events,\u201d Raskin said. \u201cHe was out propagandizing his followers, as you say, for months \u2014 first to prepare them that his loss would have to be a fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">A White House spokesman could not be reached Sunday for reaction to Raskin\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">No president has ever been convicted in the Senate, and it would take a two-thirds vote against Trump, an extremely high hurdle. But a conviction is not out of the realm of possibility, especially as corporations and wealthy political donors distance themselves from his brand of politics and the Republicans who stood by his attempt to overturn the election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">In an emotional second half of the 20-minute interview, Raskin discussed his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/politics\/bs-md-pol-tommy-ruskin-death-20210105-napqncfxb5ayjigyd6mjy36qay-story.html\" target=\"_blank\"> late son Tommy Raskin<\/a>, who died by suicide in December after battling depression.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Memories of the younger Raskin, a passionate animal and human rights advocate, a poet and a 25-year-old law student at Harvard University, have motivated the congressman\u2019s impeachment fight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to lose my son at the end of 2020 and lose my country, my republic, in 2021,\u201d Raskin said. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Raskin said he agreed to lead the impeachment effort despite his immense grief because of his devotion to constitutional law, and with his son\u2019s memory in mind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ve devoted my life to the Constitution, and to the republic,\u201d Raskin said. \u201cI\u2019m a professor of constitutional law. But I did it, really, with my son in my heart, and helping lead the way. I feel him in my chest.
