This is for the people of the country to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">He went on to say that Putin was too busy with issues such as mortgages that affect \u201cmillions and millions of Russians\u201d to follow the Navalny case. It came to a dramatic conclusion on Tuesday evening as the opposition leader was jailed for allegedly violating his parole.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-avj6db\">\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Red Square was closed and Moscow streets were cordoned off before the decision, as thousands of riot police were deployed across the Russian capital to prevent unrest. Still, the Kremlin claims Putin has taken little interest in the case in an apparent effort to downplay Navalny\u2019s importance to the Russian public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">\u201cIt would be stupid if Putin, instead of [his normal work], listened to speeches by convicts or thought about his place in history,\u201d Peskov said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Peskov did address Tuesday\u2019s protests against the Navalny ruling, defending a brutal crackdown by armoured riot police wielding batons that led to more than 1,150 arrests in Moscow alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Tatiana Stanovaya, a political analyst and founder of R.Politik, said that the harsh sentence against Navalny was part of a campaign to \u201cdemonstrate that no move aimed against the security services would remain unpunished\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">She said the government was ready to weather the backlash to Navalny\u2019s imprisonment, whether it be international condemnation or street demonstrations in Russia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"youtube-block-11\" class=\"css-10khgmf\">\n<div data-chromatic=\"ignore\">\n<div data-chromatic=\"ignore\">\n<div class=\"css-fmnl8g-className\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"youtube-video-pye3koBbRLM\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny jailed for two years and eight months  \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pye3koBbRLM?embed_config={%22adsConfig%22:{%22adTagParameters%22:{%22iu%22:%22\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/world\/article\/ng%22,%22cust_params%22:%22sens%3Df%26si%3Df%26vl%3D0%26cc%3DUK%26s%3Dworld%26inskin%3Df%26ct%3Darticle%26co%3Droth-andrew%26url%3D%252Fworld%252F2021%252Ffeb%252F03%252Fkremlin-tries-downplay-navalny-jailing-thousands-arrested-riot-police%26su%3D4%2C5%26edition%3Duk%26tn%3Dnews%26p%3Dng%26k%3Dvladimir-putin%2Ceurope-news%2Calexei-navalny%2Crussia%26sh%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fgu.com%252Fp%252Fgahmm%26pa%3Df%22}}}&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com&amp;widgetid=1&amp;modestbranding=1\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-b0ztmo-overlayStyles-className\" tabindex=\"0\"><picture>Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny jailed for two years and eight months \u2013 video<\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">\u201cMake no mistake, the Kremlin is not terribly afraid of protests,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">A total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/feb\/02\/russian-opposition-leader-alexei-navalny-jailed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">1,438 people were arrested across the country<\/a>, the OVD-Info monitor reported, with many sent to jails already overcrowded with protesters detained over the last two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">In one case, protesters detained at a rally on Sunday released a video two days later saying they were being held by police in a bus in -11C temperatures because there was no space at a local jail for illegal immigrants that was being used to help process the thousands of detainees.<\/p>\n<div id=\"rich-link-15\">\n<div class=\"css-ykabtf\" data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-0 | 0\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"\">\n<div class=\"css-wz7t6r\">\n<div class=\"css-czzadl\">\u201cFor the last nine hours we\u2019ve been held in a bus where we\u2019re being forced to remain standing,\u201d one man said in a video posted to the internet. \u201cWe don\u2019t have water. We aren\u2019t taken to the toilets.
