The toxic political and cultural chaos of the past several years has crowded out everything else. The attention span becomes more limited by social media and social norms sliding further into the abyss.

And the pandemic, still, always the pandemic.

At the same time, some signs of hope. Vaccines, if human decency can prevail in the meantime and the toll of the lack of it does not outrace vaccines with variants and other issues. And more focus on basic needs for those who need it in the US than in decades. Perhaps a leading indicator, perhaps not given the politics polarized and more dangerous than any time since the Civil War, and similar contexts world wide alongside nationalism challenging global stability.

In the end, basic needs and rights for all, equality and security for all, will, as we keep on saying, prevail, or we and the planet will not.

As we’ve said, other global pandemics have raged for ages, such as a billion abused children and a billion going hungry and nuclear weapons everywhere about to spread and soon to destroy us unless the trend is reversed and the environment all life depends on increasingly inflicting the damage on us that we have inflicted on it.

Part of moving forward as part of the solution instead of as part of the probelm, is remembering. Telling the truth. Insisting on justice.

It is arguably true that the most important conflicts and revolts and civil wars and hopefully the ultimate prevailing of truth, justice and love, occurs in families. The majority of child abuse occurs there. The people who perpetrate the other worst deeds as part of larger social crimes against humanity are all members of families.

A memory which was a Cause célèbre in the 70’s and 80’s was the opposition to the right-wing military dictatorship in Argentina which came to power through a coup 45 years ago on March 24, 1976 and stayed in power until 1983.

Virtually the same thing happened throughout Latin and Central America at the time, followed generally by the overthrow of those dictatorships, with democracy and governance ensuing by those often most repressed, at least in places and for a time, with democracy still at least tenuously continuing in most of these places.

In part as a reaction to every corner of the globe being a conflict zone, or perceived as potentially one, between the US and Soviets during the Cold War, the US tacitly supported the military dictatorship in Argentina (The George Washington University national security project posted newly released national security documents showing this on the eve of the anniversary.) In other places in Latin and Central America, US involvement was similar or even more direct.

Argentina was considered by many as the worst perpetrator of crimes against humanity during the era.

One of the things that made Argentina so promient as an issue were the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Madres de Plaza de Mayo), who demonstrated daily against the dictatorhip and whose founders were murdered or “disappeared” just as tens of thousands of others were–the reason for the protests of the Mothers.

The leader of the military dictatorship was imprisoned for life for crimes against humanity, child trafficking, kidnapping and murder, and died in prison in 2013. Others were also convicted and imprisoned, including 29 more for life in 2017. The arm of justice in this situation turned out to be long so far, a promising side for international human rights enforcement, and of the impact of popular will, which is to say the collective impact of individual actions, in Argentina, which has also happened elsewhere.

The history of Argentina has been long and tortured in many ways, which is not going to be the subject here. But as everywhere, the core issue was and is the haves and have-nots, who has power and who doesn’t. We urge your own research and study of the history of Argentina, just as everywhere else.

The subject here however, is centered on how change happens to protect human rights, what the cost is, what the cost of not doing so is, and how the family is inevitably often at the core of the call to and resistance to memory and change.

We let this extraordinary Long Read from the BBC News, and accompanying documentary and podcast from the BBC World Service, speak for themselves:

“My Father, the Killer”

Valeria Perasso, Social Affairs correspondent, 25 March 2021, BBC World Service

“Did you actually kill hundreds of people, Dad?” It’s not a question that many people feel the need to ask their parents.
