The delta variant has driven a surge of cases in the state capital, Sydney, which remains shut down until July 16.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"diamond-blt pb-sm lh-lg relative pl-md\" data-qa=\"key-updates-item\"><span class=\"font--meta-text font-light font-xxs\">The delta variant is now dominant in the United States, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\" target=\"_blank\">new estimates<\/a> from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the two weeks ending July 3, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/delta-variant-already-dominant-us-cdc-estimates-show-2021-07-07\/\" target=\"_blank\">more than 51 percent of new cases<\/a> were linked to the variant, the agency said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"diamond-blt pb-sm lh-lg relative pl-md\" data-qa=\"key-updates-item\"><span class=\"font--meta-text font-light font-xxs\">England\u2019s coronavirus infections have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/covid-19-infections-england-have-quadrupled-since-june-study-finds-2021-07-07\/\" target=\"_blank\">quadrupled since early June<\/a>, according to a new study by Imperial College London, as the delta variant gains ground among mostly unvaccinated populations. Despite the surge, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to lift nearly all coronavirus-related restrictions later this month.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">At the same time,<b> <\/b>\u201csome countries with high vaccination coverage are \u2026 relaxing as though the pandemic is already over,\u201d said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. \u201cThe world is at a perilous point in this pandemic \u2026 far too many countries in every region in the world are seeing sharp spikes in cases and hospitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">His remarks came as several nations, particularly in Europe, were set to fully reopen or had already lifted some virus curbs, even as the delta variant was gaining ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">In Spain, authorities in some regions<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-spain-coronavirus-pandemic-health-business-c03dead9ceedeb6f1e3e563d8cea2a68\" target=\"_blank\"> reimposed restrictions on nightlife<\/a> this week amid a surge in infections among younger people who have not yet been vaccinated. A French minister on Thursday advised residents to refrain from traveling to Spain and Portugal, where the delta variant is prevalent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">In England, where at least 95 percent of new cases are caused by the delta variant, Johnson announced plans to relax nearly all coronavirus-related restrictions later this month. The move to reopen could lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/07\/06\/coronavirus-latest-updates\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_18\" target=\"_blank\">a daily case rate of 100,000<\/a> this summer, Britain\u2019s health secretary said earlier this week. But officials there say that widespread vaccinations will help keep hospitalizations and deaths down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">\u201cIt\u2019s been good to see the drop-off in hospitalizations and deaths in many countries that are achieving high vaccination levels,\u201d Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO\u2019s Health Emergencies Program, said at the briefing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">He also pointed to a 33 percent increase last week in new cases in the 53 countries that make up the WHO\u2019s European region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">\u201cI think that it\u2019s also a moment for extreme caution for countries right now,\u201d he said. \u201cSo the idea that everyone is protected and it\u2019s Kumbaya and everything goes back to normal \u2014 I think that is a very dangerous assumption anywhere in the world. And it\u2019s still a dangerous assumption in the European environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">According to the WHO and data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the pandemic\u2019s official global death toll surpassed 4 million Wednesday, a figure Tedros said was probably an underestimate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/national\/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths\/?itid=sf_coronavirus_sn_coronavirus-us-cases-deaths_1&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_25\" target=\"_blank\">More than 605,000<\/a> of those deaths were recorded in the United States.
