World Health Organization officials issued stern warnings to nations planning to relax coronavirus restrictions as global deaths from the virus topped 4 million and the more virulent delta variant was spotted in more than 100 countries, including those with high vaccination rates.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a briefing Wednesday, the officials cautioned that more contagious variants were \u201ccurrently winning the race against vaccines,\u201d as most of the world\u2019s population has yet to be immunized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Even the delta variant, which was first identified in India and is now tearing through unvaccinated populations around the world, \u201cis itself mutating and will continue to do so,\u201d said Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead at the WHO\u2019s Health Emergencies Program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere are more than two dozen countries that have epidemic curves that are almost vertical right now,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re not in a good place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
