She used the photo-sharing app to follow fitness influencers, but what began as a constructive relationship with the platform spiralled into a crisis centred on body image. At 19 she was diagnosed with an eating disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cI felt like my body wasn\u2019t good enough, because even though I did go to the gym a lot, my body still never looked like the bodies of these influencers,\u201d says Emily, now a 20-year-old a student who is in recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Emily, who preferred not to use her real name, uses Instagram sparingly now. She is one of many Instagram users whose suffering came to prominence this week with revelations that the platform\u2019s owner, Facebook, seemed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/sep\/14\/facebook-aware-instagram-harmful-effect-teenage-girls-leak-reveals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">know it was damaging teenage girls\u2019 mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">According to internal research leaked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-knows-instagram-is-toxic-for-teen-girls-company-documents-show-11631620739\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> (WSJ), the app has made body image issues worse for one in three girls and in one Facebook study of teenagers in the UK and the US, more than 40% of Instagram users who said they felt \u201cunattractive\u201d said the feeling began while using the app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Instagram has more than 1 billion users worldwide and an <a href=\"https:\/\/napoleoncat.com\/stats\/instagram-users-in-united_kingdom\/2021\/01\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">estimated 30 million<\/a> in the UK, with Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande among the accounts with hundreds of millions of followers between them. This increases to half (50%) in girls aged 17 to 21, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.girlguiding.org.uk\/globalassets\/docs-and-resources\/research-and-campaigns\/girls-attitudes-survey-2021-report.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to research by Girlguiding<\/a> in its annual girls\u2019 attitudes survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Sonia Livingstone, professor of social psychology at the department of media and communications, LSE, describes adolescence for teenage girls as an \u201carc\u201d that tends to begin with the staple experiences of interest in pets, painting or playing with younger siblings, through to the more confident young woman ready to face the world. But it is the experience in the middle of that parabola that represents a particular challenge, and where Instagram can be most troubling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cIt is at that point where they are assailed with many answers to their dilemmas and a prominent answer at the moment is that it might be what they look like, that it matters what they bought,\u201d says Livingstone, who next week is due to give evidence to MPs and peers scrutinising the draft UK online safety bill, which imposes a duty of care on social media companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/sep\/15\/mp-calls-for-facebook-to-be-punished-if-it-holds-back-evidence-of-harm-to-users\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">protect users from harmful content<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline2\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--offset-right ad-slot--inline2 ad-slot--outstream ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline2\" data-name=\"inline2\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|fluid\" data-phablet=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|620,350|550,310|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|300,274|620,1|620,350|550,310|fluid|300,600|160,600\" data-google-query-id=\"CMfsw5mriPMCFQmDfwQdEr0B1A\">\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Facebook\u2019s in-depth research into the photo-sharing app stated that Instagram had a deeper effect on teenage girls because it focused more on the body and lifestyle, compared with TikTok\u2019s emphasis on performance videos such as dancing, and Snapchat\u2019s jokey face features. \u201cSocial comparison is worse on Instagram,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/facebook\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Facebook<\/a> study. The leaked research pointed to the app\u2019s Explore page, where an algorithm tailors the photos and videos that a user sees, potentially creating a spiral of harmful content.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"fa9967d9-6e26-423e-a208-ed6896a41533\" class=\"dcr-1mfia18\">\n<div class=\"css-16cuuq6\" data-print-layout=\"hide\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-0 | 0\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-name=\"\">\n<div class=\"css-s7oxzu\">\n<div class=\"css-ghyc83\"><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"css-q4dzvk\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/fcc5048bf280cd128d503ff11d7e0277e944766a\/0_73_2007_1204\/master\/2007.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=ed4c032a2deb6df1c8e799f68d232f28\" alt=\"Leaked documents showed that among teenagers who had suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of US users traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram.\" width=\"2007\" height=\"1204\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1d91meq\">\n<div class=\"css-m4qltb\">\n<div class=\"css-1gqsble\">MP calls for Facebook to be punished if it holds back evidence of harm to users<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-9g571g\">\n<div class=\"css-dobi02\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/sep\/15\/mp-calls-for-facebook-to-be-punished-if-it-holds-back-evidence-of-harm-to-users\">Read more<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cAspects of Instagram exacerbate each other to create a perfect storm,\u201d said the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Livingstone says a key feature of the online safety bill will be its provisions on regulating the algorithms that constantly tailor and tweak what you view according to your perceived needs and tastes \u2013 and can push teenage girls into that vortex of esteem-damaging content. \u201cThere is a lot to be done about algorithms and AI [artificial intelligence].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Beeban Kidron, the crossbench peer who sits on the joint committee into the online safety bill and was behind the recent introduction of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/sep\/02\/uk-childrens-digital-privacy-code-comes-into-effect\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">children\u2019s privacy code<\/a>, says Ofcom, the UK communications watchdog, will have a vital role in scrutinising algorithms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cThe value in algorithmic oversight for regulators, is that the decisions that tech companies make will become transparent, including decisions like FB took to allow Instagram to target teenage girls with images and features that ended in anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. Algorithmic oversight is the key to society wrestling back some control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport says the bill will address those concerns. \u201cAs part of their duty of care, companies will need to mitigate the risks of their algorithms promoting illegal or harmful content, particularly to children. Deana Puccio, co-founder of the Rap project, which visits schools across the UK and abroad to discuss issues such as consent, online and offline safety and building confidence in body image and self-esteem, says the bill should be accompanied by a wider education drive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--outstream ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|fluid\" data-phablet=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|620,350|550,310|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|300,274|620,1|620,350|550,310|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"COemybSriPMCFSgS-QAdNf4Kpg\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot__content\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cWe, parents, educators, politicians need to equip our young people with the tools, the analytical skills to make healthy choices for themselves. Because they will get access to whatever they want to. They are better at navigating the online world than we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Puccio adds that teenagers should be encouraged to make their social media posts reflect a more realistic vision of the world. \u201cWe need to start building up people\u2019s confidence to post real-life ups and downs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">The head of Instagram risked fanning criticism of the app on Thursday with comments that compared social media\u2019s impact on society to that of cars. \u201cWe know that more people die than would otherwise because of car accidents, but by and large, cars create way more value in the world than they destroy.
