She was 69.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_ar_b\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The author&#8217;s family confirmed her death to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2021\/12\/15\/bell-hooks-aint-woman-and-all-love-author-dies-69\/8910407002\/\">USA TODAY<\/a>, saying she died Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;We sadly confirm that our sister Gloria Jean Watkins (bell hooks) passed away at her home in Berea KY in the early morning hour today. She chose cremation so a celebration of life service will be at a later time,&#8221; her family said in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2021\/12\/15\/bell-hooks-quotes-books-love-feminism\/8910938002\/\" data-t-l=\":embed (inline link)|e|inline click|${u}\">&#8216;Living simply makes loving simple&#8217;: bell hooks quotes on love, relationships and feminism<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Born Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville, Kentucky she went on to pen many literary works under the pseudonym bell hooks, a tribute to her great-grandmother that she chose to write using lowercase letters to\u00a0focus attention on her words rather than herself.\u00a0After receiving a Bachelors&#8217;\u00a0degree from\u00a0Stanford University, a Master&#8217;s from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her doctorate a the University of California &#8211; Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hooks went on to teach at many institutions\u00a0while harnessing a career in literature and penning more than\u00a030 books. She educated minds at Yale University, Oberlin College and City College of New York. She joined the Berea College faculty in 2004 and a decade later founded the center named for her, where \u201cmany and varied expressions of difference can thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Starting in the 1970s, hooks published books that helped shape popular and academic discourse. She went on to write more books studying the topic including\u00a0&#8220;Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;Feminism is for Everybody.&#8221; Among her most famous expressions was her definition of feminism, which she called \u201ca movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-entertainment-books-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CLP3m9GN6PQCFR4V-QAdYt4ACQ\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Her early influences ranged from James Baldwin and Sojourner Truth to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cMartin Luther King was my teacher for understanding the importance of beloved community. He had a profound awareness that the people involved in oppressive institutions will not change from the logics and practices of domination without engagement with those who are striving for a better way,\u201d she said in an interview that ran in Appalachian Heritage in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hooks examined how stereotypes influence everything from movies (\u201cthe oppositional gaze\u201d) to love, writing in \u201cAll About Love\u201d that \u201cmuch of what we were taught about the nature of love makes no sense when applied to daily life.\u201d She also documented at length the collective identity and past of Black people in rural Kentucky, a part of the state often depicted as largely white and homogeneous.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"message\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Her writing went on to collect many awards and accolades\u00a0including the American Book\u00a0Award in 1991 for &#8220;Yearning: Race, Gender, and Cultural Politics.&#8221; In 2013, she was honored with the Best Poetry Award by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association for her book &#8220;Appalachian Elegy: Poetry and Place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The literary community shared an outpouring of tributes to hooks on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Oh my heart. bell hooks,&#8221; <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rgay\/status\/1471163403628683267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">wrote acclaimed writer Roxane Gay<\/a>. &#8220;May she rest in power.
