In the one empty room, a person had just died.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Through surge after surge, caregivers in the unit at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Mich., have helped ailing patients say goodbye to their relatives on video calls. The medical workers have cried in the dimly lit hallways. They have seen caseloads wane, only to watch beds fill up again. Mostly, they have learned to fear the worst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cYou come back to work and you ask who died,\u201d said Bridget Klingenberg, an intensive care nurse at Covenant, where staff levels are so strained that the <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/som\/0,4669,7-192-29942_34762-573323--,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defense Department recently sent reinforcements<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think people understand the toll that that takes unless you\u2019ve actually done it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The highly contagious Omicron variant arrives in the United States at a moment when there is little capacity left in hospitals, especially in the Midwest and Northeast, where case rates are the highest, and where many health care workers are still contending with the Delta variant. Some researchers are hopeful that Omicron may cause less severe disease than Delta, but health officials still worry that the new variant could send a medical system already under pressure to the breaking point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">About 1,300 Americans are dying from the coronavirus each day. The national case, death and hospitalization rates remain well below those seen last winter, before vaccines were widely available. But suddenly, positive tests are growing. State officials in New York reported more than 20,000 coronavirus cases on Friday, which they said was more than on any other day of the pandemic. In Connecticut and Maine, reports of new infections have grown by around 150 percent in the last two weeks. In Ohio and Indiana, hospitalization rates are approaching those seen during last winter\u2019s devastating wave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><picture><source Dr. Matthew Deibel, the medical director for emergency care at Covenant, where patients must sometimes wait hours to be seen because of a shortage of beds and staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-wrapper\" class=\"css-zz666k\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\">\n<p>With coronavirus hospitalizations increasing 20 percent nationally over the last two weeks, to 68,000 people, doctors and nurses are speaking with renewed alarm about conditions and pleading with people to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Last week, Omicron accounted for 2.9 percent of cases across the country, up from 0.4 percent the previous week, according to <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projections released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. Across New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ash\/about-ash\/regional-offices\/region-2\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health authorities estimated<\/a> that Omicron infections were already accounting for 13.1 percent of new cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj There, in a slender hallway with a low ceiling, nurses buzz in and out of rooms. The floor is busy but not panicky, with the whirring and beeping of machines making up most of the soundtrack. Many of the sick are sedated and on ventilators, unable to speak with their doctors. Others are confused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThis illness is dehumanizing,\u201d said Dr. Amjad Nader, who cares for people in that unit. He added, \u201cSometimes I don\u2019t see light in the eyes of my patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Many of the caregivers on that floor have become virus experts. They talk about the satisfaction of calling a patient\u2019s spouse if the patient no longer needs a ventilator after weeks of treatment. They lament the frustration of having no cure. And somebody has to do it. And we\u2019re apparently the people who have chosen to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But the pandemic was not something she could leave at work. Family members tested positive. their 20s, she had a severe case and was hospitalized at the University of Michigan. For a time, she faced the possibility of intubation. Then, after about a week, she started to improve. She was able to go home. Her baby was healthy and did not have to be delivered early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The experience and the fear, she said, now helps her connect with her patients getting the same breathing treatments she received months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThey have these moments of distress because this mass is strapped onto you, you can\u2019t take it off, it\u2019s pushing air into your lungs,\u201d Ms. Klingenberg said. \u201cYour natural reaction is to fight against that. So I can help, I feel like, calm them down and tell them exactly: \u2018I understand what this feels like. I know exactly what you\u2019re going through.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">At other moments, she said, the trauma and the relentlessness of the pandemic \u2014 wave after wave \u2014 feel like too much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ll be taking care of these patients and all of a sudden I\u2019ll be right back at U. of M., and I get flashbacks sometimes,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I\u2019m still trying to heal from that almost-near-death experience. And then I came right back to Covid, which was my choice.
