Within weeks, the virus \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/coronavirus\">Sars-CoV-2<\/a> \u2013 had spread across the world and ushered in a frightening new disease for the 21st Century: Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Health agencies across the world realised quickly that even relatively humble disposable masks, if worn correctly over the mouth and nose, went a long way to preventing the spread of the virus. In 2021, as the world entered its second full year of the Covid-19 pandemic, masks were a ubiquitous reminder of the health emergency the world was grappling hotspots were largely deserted as the world welcomed 2021, partly due to the rise in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-57489740\">Delta variant<\/a>, a highly transmissible mutation of the virus which was first observed in October 2020.<\/p>\n<p>All-inclusive resorts like this one in the Dominican Republic reopened after many months, but tourists were in many cases wary of \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Masks became a new form of advertising and a vehicle for viral messaging, especially for those in the political realm. One of them was the pan-European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/european-championship\">Euro 2020<\/a> football championships, which took place in cities ranging from the Seville in Spain to Baku in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being held in open-air stadiums, the championships brought serious infection implications due to the massive movement of fans from airports to hotels and transport hubs to stadiums. The games had also been postponed from the summer of 2020 \u2013 with a vaccination campaign in full swing, it was hoped that the event would be much safer with a year&#8217;s delay. Athletes were required to wear their masks at all Olympics venues \u2013 even on the medal podium.<\/p>\n<p>There were fears that the games might have to be played to empty venues \u2013 that is in fact what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/06\/21\/Tokyo-Olympics-fans-allowed-summer-games-2020-IOC-Japan-government-Suga-state-of-emergency-masks-vaccines-covid-19-pandemic\/stories\/202106210055\">Japan&#8217;s chief scientist recommended<\/a>. In the end, however, fans were allowed, though capacity at venues was reduced to help social distancing. This skier near a lift at the Alpe d&#8217;Huez ski resort was obliged to wear a mask. In stark contrast to his predecessor Donald Trump, who went without a mask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/kadiagoba\/trump-coronavirus-masks-campaign-rally\">even while holding political rallies<\/a> in the run-up to the 2020 election, President Joe Biden consistently donned a mask. The pontiff was criticised by some last year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/oct\/26\/pope-francis-criticised-for-rarely-wearing-face-mask-covid\">not wearing masks enough in public settings<\/a>, and appeared to have taken that criticism to heart. Just one company \u2013 the giant US conglomerate 3M \u2013 alone produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1232566\/global-n95-mask-production-of-3m\/\">some 2.5 billion in 2021<\/a>. But what about when they weren&#8217;t being worn? Was it safer to hang an unused mask off your arm or stuff it in your pocket or bag?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention is clear on this: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/downloads\/hcp\/fs-facemask-dos-donts.pdf\">don&#8217;t dangle an unused mask off your arm or around your neck<\/a>, lest it get further contaminated. Though according to 3M&#8217;s own guidance on mask wearing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3m.com\/3M\/en_US\/personal-health-care-us\/products\/facemasks\/dos-and-donts\/\">neither should you keep one in a bag or pocket between uses<\/a>.
