If Putin had handpicked an agent to be president of the United States, he could hardly have expected better results; Trump certainly exceeded any expectations Putin might have had with fawning admiration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/12\/at-nato-summit-trump-abuses-americas-closest-friends\/602959\/\" target=\"_blank\">disparaging<\/a> NATO, extorting Ukraine by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/trump-ordered-hold-on-military-aid-days-before-calling-ukrainian-president-officials-say\/2019\/09\/23\/df93a6ca-de38-11e9-8dc8-498eabc129a0_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\">withholding <\/a>military aid, leaving Russia\u2019s election-meddling unpunished, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-g7-summit-trump\/trump-says-its-common-sense-to-include-russia-in-g7-idUSKBN23A285\" target=\"_blank\">inviting<\/a> Putin back into the Group of Seven and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/10\/28\/774178719\/a-history-of-trumps-broken-ties-to-the-u-s-intelligence-community\" target=\"_blank\">attacking<\/a> our own intelligence community. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), ridiculed as a presidential candidate in 2012 for identifying Russia as our primary international foe (he was premature but prescient), on Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ANhfomi8sSU\" target=\"_blank\">called out Putin\u2019s admirers<\/a> in his own party as \u201calmost treasonous\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" data-oembed-type=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ANhfomi8sSU?feature=oembed\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Romney hit on an uncomfortable truth: The GOP\u2019s Putin apologists include also the loudest and most odious Trump supporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The divisions within the GOP are stark and becoming unsustainable. In the first group are a tiny handful of Republicans who opposed Trump, supported his impeachment (at least the second one), condemned his assaults on the NATO alliance and denounced his Putin-worship. Other than Romney, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has remained a consistent defender of democracy and opponent of Trump and Putin \u2014 and Cheney has been merciless when it comes to their apologists. (\u201cAs Russian forces invade Ukraine, Russian TV features Donald Trump, Mike Pompeo and Tucker Carlson praising Putin,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepLizCheney\/status\/1497386334255783938?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1497386334255783938%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newsweek.com%2Fcheney-rips-trump-pompeo-praising-russian-president-putin-evil-1682980\" target=\"_blank\">she tweeted on Friday<\/a>. \u201cPutin is evil. Every American watching what\u2019s happening in Ukraine should know that.\u201d)<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">On Sunday, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-sanctions-putin-liz-cheney-face-the-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation\u201d that we have seen \u201cimpressive progress\u201d with sanctions on Russia and praised the unity of the alliance, while making constructive suggestions for further steps (e.g., a complete freeze-out of the Russian central bank and sanctioning oligarchs\u2019 families).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">It is noteworthy that Romney and Cheney avoid any anti-Biden gibberish, a cheap way for Republicans to appear pro-Trump and pro-MAGA by implication but at the risk of once more undercutting democracies and weakening a united front against Putin.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">This brings us to the second group of Republicans, the cowardly and incoherent latecomers to Ukraine\u2019s side. They would have us forget Trump\u2019s appeasement and his unabated flattery for Putin, both of which they countenanced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font--article-body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">From House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to staunch Trump apologist Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to the entire Republican Party apparatus (which keeps up a<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillKristol\/status\/1496230105357639686\" target=\"_blank\"> constant stream of juvenile insults <\/a>directed at Biden), the largest group of Republicans now vilifies Biden for being too weak (despite the most unified and robust response from the West and success in making Putin a pariah). These were the people who suggested there was nothing wrong with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/09\/25\/rough-transcript-trumps-call-with-ukraines-president-annotated\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_16\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s call<\/a> in 2019 attempting to extort Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky (now a national hero and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/26\/opinions\/zelensky-courage-ukraine-russia-parini\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">international symbol of courage<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">On ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week,\u201d George Stephanopoulos gallantly <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-27-22-white-house-press-secretary\/story?id=83130361\" target=\"_blank\">pressed<\/a>Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.): \u201cWhy can\u2019t you condemn Donald Trump for those comments [praising Putin]?\u201d He continued: \u201cYou\u2019re a senior member of the Republican Party. Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. \u2026 When Fox News asked him if he had a message for Vladimir Putin, he said he has no message.\u201d Stephanopoulos never got an answer. Cotton refused to rule out supporting Trump in 2024, to Stephanopoulos\u2019s utter frustration. (\u201cI simply don\u2019t understand why you can\u2019t condemn his praise of Vladimir Putin,\u201d Stephanopoulos said. Hint: Cotton\u2019s ambition and spinelessness prevent him from breaking with Trump.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Some Republicans get so confused they lose track of who\u2019s on Ukraine\u2019s side. Taking the prize for incoherence, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) bizarrely <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Acyn\/status\/1497960912665206794\" target=\"_blank\">attacked Democrats<\/a> \u2014 such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and others who played a role in Trump\u2019s impeachment for betraying U.S. security interests and extorting Ukraine \u2014 for <i>weakening Ukraine<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Some right-wing pundits become apologists for Putin\u2019s cringeworthy defenders. On NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Danielle Pletka (who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/09\/20\/what-unites-republicans-progressives\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\">defended voting for Trump<\/a> in 2020) bizarrely claimed former secretary of state Mike Pompeo \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/after-trump-and-pompeo-praise-putin-gop-sees-a-missed-opportunity\/160453567\" target=\"_blank\">misspoke<\/a>\u201d when he repeatedly praised Putin. (NBC foreign affairs reporter Andrea Mitchell appeared flabbergasted, pointing out that Pompeo fawned over Putin more than once). Self-humiliation is no barrier to hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">One cannot be an unrepentant apologist for Trump (or his advisers) and favor his return to the presidency (or at least not oppose it) while also taking Ukraine\u2019s side and defending Western democracies. These are diametrically opposed goals. We dare not return to power Trump acolytes who denigrate America (when much of the world has rallied behind the U.S. president), bolster authoritarianism, rationalize political violence, abhor a free press and fail to stand up to Putin\u2019s favorite patsy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The third category of Republicans \u2014 including Trump, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Fox News\u2019s Tucker Carlson (disclaimer: I\u2019m an MSNBC contributor) \u2014 remains supportive of Putin. A flock of right-wing media personalities echo their namesake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/parallels\/2017\/02\/06\/513240634\/america-first-from-charles-lindbergh-to-president-trump\" target=\"_blank\">American Firsters<\/a> of the 1930s, who insisted we had no dog in Europe\u2019s war. (Consider what would have occurred if Trump had been elected in 2020. Ukraine, perhaps the Baltics too, would be cooked, and the West would be in disarray.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">How long can Romney and Cheney tolerate the cognitive dissonance required to remain in a party aligned with Trump and Putin apologists?
