Sergey Bobok\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/pictureshow\/2022\/03\/06\/1084766289\/ukraine-russia-war-pictures-refugees\">Ukraine<\/a> have been ongoing for nearly a month and have resulted in nearly 5,000 civilian causalities, the statement said. Mariupol, once home to nearly a half million people, has been without food, water, electricity, or gas for weeks,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/usun.usmission.gov\/remarks-by-ambassador-linda-thomas-greenfield-at-the-un-general-assembly-emergency-special-session-on-ukraine\/\">Thomas-Greenfield said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She added that &#8220;Russia&#8217;s actions in Mariupol will be investigated thoroughly, and importantly, known by the world as a symbol of Russian brutality, alongside those in Aleppo and Grozny.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">The International Criminal Court will open an investigation<\/h3>\n<p>Blinken also added that a court of law with proper jurisdiction is the only way to determine guilt. But the U.S. government will continue to track reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/onpoint\/2022\/03\/07\/war-crimes-putin-russia-ukraine-conflict-nato\">war crimes<\/a> and is &#8220;committed to pursuing accountability,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the International Criminal Court said it would open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/28\/1083598057\/icc-ukraine-investigation\">an investigation<\/a> into war crime claims in Ukraine &#8220;as rapidly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The investigation will build on previous research from the ICC when it was looking into the possibility of war crimes in Ukraine since late 2013.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\"><\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;Given the expansion of the conflict in recent days, it is my intention that this investigation will also encompass any new alleged crimes falling within the jurisdiction of my Office that are committed by any party to the conflict on any part of the territory of Ukraine,&#8221; ICC chief prosecutor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/Pages\/item.aspx?name=20220228-prosecutor-statement-ukraine\">Karim A.A.
