Zelenskiy has said that Russia\u2019s public image is now one of torture and execution<\/a> after the retreat of Russian forces in the town of Bucha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/apr\/03\/bucha-violence-invasion-russia-ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">led to the discovery of the killing of hundreds of civilians<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-185kcx9\" data-gu-name=\"body\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1t6t995\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-j7ihvk\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-ucgxn1\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Calling Russian soldiers \u201cmurderers\u201d, \u201cbutchers\u201d and \u201crapists\u201d, Zelenskiy said late on Sunday: \u201cyour culture and human appearance perished together with the Ukrainian men and women\u201d. He warned that \u201ceven worse things\u201d may be found in other occupied regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Ukrainian officials said the bodies of 410 civilians have been found in Kyiv-area towns that were recently retaken from Russian forces. Satellite images taken late last week show a 14-metre (45ft) mass grave in Bucha near the Church of St Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints. Taras Schevchenko, 43, said Russian soldiers had refused to allow men to leave through a humanitarian corridor, instead shooting at them as they fled across an open field. Bodies, he said, were scattered on the pavements, with some of those killed having been \u201csquashed by tanks \u2026 like animal skin rugs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Shevchenko\u2019s mother, Yevdokia, 77, said she had witnessed an elderly man who had challenged a Russian soldier being shot dead as his wife stood next to him. \u201cThey shot him dead, and ordered the woman to leave,\u201d she said. celebration in Las Vegas and appealed to viewers to support his country \u201cin any way you can\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">\u201cFill the silence with your music. Fill it today, to tell our story. Support us in any way you can. Any, but not silence,\u201d Zelenskiy said in English in a video introducing John Legend\u2019s performance of Free and featured Ukrainian musicians and a reading by Ukrainian poet Lyuba Yakimchuck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Russia denied responsibility for the killing of civilians. Its defence ministry described the photos and videos from towns such as Bucha as \u201canother staged performance by the Kyiv regime\u201d, echoing a similar claim made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/10\/ukraine-president-zelenskiy-decries-mariupol-childrens-maternity-hospital-bombing-genocide-as-us-13bn-aid-bill-passes-first-hurdle\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">after the bombing of a children\u2019s and maternity hospital in Mariupol.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/apr\/03\/eu-leaders-condemn-killing-of-unarmed-civilians-in-bucha-and-kyiv\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Figures around the world have condemned the brutality of Russian president Vladimir Putin\u2019s forces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">The UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, said the \u201cdespicable\u201d killings added to evidence of Russian war crimes, while the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, expressed shock about the \u201cterrible and horrifying\u201d footage from Bucha.\u201cStreets littered with bodies. Bodies buried in makeshift conditions. There is talk of women, children and the elderly among the victims,\u201d Scholz said. An independent investigation was urgently needed, she said, and \u201cperpetrators of war crimes will be held accountable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Zelenskiy said he expected a UN security council meeting on Tuesday to discuss the atrocities, and was scathing on Sunday night of a historic western policy of \u201cappeasing\u201d Russia by failing to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ukraine<\/a> a Nato member 14 years ago at a summit in Bucharest. He invited former German and French leaders Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy to visit Bucha \u201cto see what the policy of concessions\u201d to Russia has led to, and urged Ukraine\u2019s allies to do more than increase sanctions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Australia warned on Monday against inferring much from the withdrawal of Russian forces around Kyiv. \u201cThey are now regrouping. They are using it as an operational pause and I\u2019m sure they will mount another assault and therefore we need support of the free world to help us fight,\u201d said ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">\u201cWe see civilians\u2019 dead bodies lying around the city, many of them have their hands tied up. We are now collecting the evidence from the witnesses,\u201d Myroshnychenko said of the recent discoveries in town such as Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel. \u201cMultiple rapes of women, children killed. This is a massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">The west needed to provide heavy weapons, air defence systems, anti-ship missiles, armoured, vehicles, tanks and planes to help Ukraine, the ambassador said. \u201cIt\u2019s only two and a half flight from Kyiv to Paris. We\u2019re in the middle of Europe and this is happening now in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">In other developments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-1wj398p\">\n<li>Work is under way to bring the town of Bucha \u201cback to life\u201d, said Zelenskiy, with critical infrastructure such as power, water and hospital care being restored.<\/li>\n<li>The Ukrainian military claimed in its operational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MinistryofDefence.UA\/posts\/289168056728987\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">report<\/a> on Monday morning that Russia has launched a \u201chidden mobilisation\u201d of around 60,000 soldiers to replenish units lost in Ukraine.<\/li>\n<li>Ukraine\u2019s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba urged the international criminal court and international organisations to come to the region to collect evidence of Russian war crimes. Speaking on Times Radio on Sunday, he said Bucha was a \u201cdeliberate massacre\u201d. Describing Russia as \u201cworse than Isis\u201d, he said Russian forces were guilty of murder, torture, rape and looting.
