The casualty count is far higher than what most people could have imagined in the early days of the pandemic, particularly because then-President Donald Trump repeatedly downplayed the virus while in office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;This is their new hoax,&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-calls-coronavirus-democrats-new-hoax-n1145721\"> Trump said of Democrats<\/a> in front of a cheering crowd at a rally in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Feb. 28, 2020. &#8220;So far we have lost nobody to coronavirus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A day later, health officials in Washington made the inevitable announcement: a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/1st-coronavirus-death-u-s-officials-say-n1145931\"> coronavirus patient<\/a> in their state had died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Now, more than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/coronavirus-timeline-tracking-critical-moments-covid-19-n1154341\"> two years and 999,999 fatalities later<\/a>, the U.S. death toll is the world&#8217;s highest total by a significant margin,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1104709\/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants\/\"> figures show<\/a>. Diana Ordonez&#8217;s husband worked in information security management and had just gotten promoted before he died. Ordonez, 35, of Waldwick, New Jersey, doesn&#8217;t always have answers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I try to be understanding, but I definitely have felt so many times that I&#8217;m not equipped to parent this person,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She finds times of joy are tinged with sadness, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;It is shadowed by, &#8216;God, I wish he was here for this,'&#8221; Ordonez said. &#8220;It could be simple moments, like watching Mia at ballet, or going to a birthday party and watching her jump up and down, holding hands with her friend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">&#8216;We had the opportunity to be a shining example&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Per capita, the U.S. ranks 18th worldwide in Covid deaths, while Peru has the highest number. Still, many see the staggering death toll as evidence of America\u2019s inadequate response to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;We had the opportunity to be a shining example to the rest of the world about how to deal with the pandemic, and we didn&#8217;t do that,&#8221; said Nico Montero, a 17-year-old in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. A recent<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2790961\"> study<\/a> calculated that about 3.2 percent of health care workers left the industry per month before the pandemic. That share jumped to 5.6 percent from April to December 2020. Relative to February 2020, the health care workforce has lost nearly 300,000 employees, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf\"> U.S. Department of Labor reported<\/a>\u00a0April 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ho decided to become a comedian. Combining his experience treating Covid patients with comedy, he donned his hospital scrubs to create a popular series of TikTok videos called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@steveioe\/video\/6964452481346702598?_t=8R53wUJ9AvD&amp;_r=1\"> &#8220;Tips From the Emergency Room.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It was Ho&#8217;s way of coping with what he had witnessed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;It helped me release this pent-up energy, anger and sadness,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">A pandemic that continued long after the advent of vaccines<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">More than half of U.S. Covid deaths have occurred since President Joe Biden was inaugurated in January 2021.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget layout-grid-item embed-widget--medium\">\n<div id=\"20200128-coronavirus-us-count\" class=\"embed-widget__use-presentation embed-widget__iframely-\">\n<div class=\"iframely-dataviz-nbcnews iframely-app iframely-embed\">\n<div class=\"iframely-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/iframe.nbcnews.com\/4xTNccd?_showcaption=true&amp;app=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dataviz.nbcnews.com\/projects\/20200128-coronavirus-us-count\/index-death.html\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"\">Most of those deaths \u2014 more than 80 percent from April to December 2021, for instance \u2014 were unvaccinated Americans, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7104e2.htm\"> CDC<\/a>. As of February, the risk of death from Covid was<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#rates-by-vaccine-status\"> 20 times higher<\/a> for unvaccinated people than for those who were vaccinated and boosted, the CDC data showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;We know vaccines work. We know masks work. We know social distancing works, and we know crowd control, limiting crowded spaces, works. Edwards, 62, was an intensive care unit nurse for three decades who treated her patients as if they were family, her daughter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I still talk to people that were working with her. I always find myself saying, &#8216;Please be careful. Gamble said it was bittersweet to accept the award on her mother&#8217;s behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;It solidified her work that she&#8217;s done,&#8221; Gamble said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The family created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursepatscholarship.org\/\">scholarship<\/a> in the hopes of bringing more nurses like Edwards into the field.
