KUOW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0<span class=\"name\">John O&#8217;Brien, May 04, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ql-size-large\">T<\/span>he Centers for Disease Control estimates<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/violenceprevention\/childsexualabuse\/fastfact.html\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201c1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the United States experience child sexual abuse.\u201d<\/a> They report that those numbers are very likely an underestimate, because \u201cmany children wait to report or never report child sexual abuse.\u201d And the perpetrators? He writes about that crime and his attempt to stop his perpetrator in his new book <em>Chosen: A Memoir of Stolen Boyhood<\/em>. In this conversation, Mills covers what has and hasn\u2019t changed over time in our understanding of childhood sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>He says that while it is dangerously na\u00efve for people responsible for protecting children to ignore the prevalence of such abuse, we do on a regular basis. He explains the ways in which we are programmed not to see it, and what we can do to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>Mills is joined by Norene Roberts, the Multidisciplinary Team Coordinator and Facilitator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cjckc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Children\u2019s Justice Center of King County<\/a>.
