{"id":13491,"date":"2022-05-18T06:25:44","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T13:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=13491"},"modified":"2022-05-18T06:26:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T13:26:45","slug":"how-putins-war-in-ukraine-backfired-and-fueled-natos-nordic-expansion-nbc-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=13491","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;How Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine backfired and fueled NATO\u2019s Nordic expansion&#8221;, NBC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <span class=\"byline-name\">Patrick Smith, May 18, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>In three short months, analysts say, Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine has reworked European security for decades to come \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/finland-sweden-nato-putin-ukraine-war-borders-west-rcna28490\">and not in Putin\u2019s favor<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<article class=\"article-body\" data-taboola-target=\"read-more\">\n<div class=\"article-body__grid--container\">\n<div class=\"article-body__section layout-grid-container\">\n<div class=\"article-body layout-grid-item layout-grid-item--with-gutter-s-only grid-col-10-m grid-col-push-1-m grid-col-6-xl grid-col-push-2-xl article-body--custom-column\">\n<section class=\"mb7\"><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-body__content\">\n<p class=\"\">Things have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/live-blog\/russia-ukraine-war-live-updates-finland-sweden-apply-join-nato-rcna29350\" target=\"_blank\">not gone to plan for Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In December, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/vladimir-putin\" target=\"_blank\">Russian president<\/a> demanded that Ukraine ditch its bid to join NATO, the Transatlantic military alliance founded after WWII to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/russia-tv-jokes-nuclear-missiles-london-putin-propaganda-ukraine-war-rcna28067\" target=\"_blank\">counter the power of the Soviet Union<\/a>, and that NATO forces retreat from Russia\u2019s western flank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead, with Putin\u2019s military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/europe\/ukraine-russia-kharkiv-border-soldiers-rcna28992\">suffering stumbles and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/live-blog\/russia-ukraine-war-live-updates-moscows-eastern-offensive-suffers-setb-rcna26754\">setbacks<\/a> on the ground in Ukraine, his grander geopolitical goals are also falling apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Far from discouraging NATO expansion, Russia\u2019s actions look set to double the length of\u00a0its border with member nations, from the Arctic Circle to the Baltic Sea, and create a new frontier in its clash with the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Finland and Sweden formally submitted their membership applications in Brussels on Wednesday morning, ending long-held neutral stances that for Stockholm stretches back 200 years to the time of Napoleon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The process of joining will take months and must be ratified by NATO\u2019s 30 members. Now Finland \u2014 and its Swedish neighbors \u2014 could be key new members of the Western alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In three short months, analysts say, the invasion of Ukraine has reworked European security for decades to come \u2014 and not in Putin\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a total political and geostrategic game-changer, for northern Europe at least,\u201d said Kate Hansen Bundt, secretary general of the Norwegian Atlantic Committee, a think tank based in Oslo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPutin\u2019s getting the opposite of what he demanded in December. Putin cannot stand liberal Western values. Latvia\u2019s foreign minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9ed8f71f-ebf1-4c39-95ae-3f504e8c3cc2\">told the Financial Times<\/a> on Friday, with a hint of relief: \u201cThe Baltic Sea becomes a NATO sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommended-intersection-ref\">\n<section class=\"related dn-print\">\n<h3 class=\"related__title\"><span class=\"related-item__eyebrow\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\">WORLD<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"related-item__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/russian-gymnast-gets-1-year-ban-wearing-war-z-symbol-rcna29374?icid=recommended\">Russian gymnast gets 1-year ban for wearing pro-war &#8216;Z&#8217; symbol<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"recommended\" class=\"related__items\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"recommended-intersection-ref\">\u00a0Finland boasts one of the largest and most well-prepared armies in Europe, with 280,000 troops mobilized and some 900,000 reservists, plus an extensive navy and air force and an advanced intelligence operation.<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">Finnish thinking on national security has been a combination of idealism and realism, Stubb said. The idealism was the attempt to trade and cooperate with Russia in the hope of bringing Moscow into the sphere of normal international relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut the realism has been to keep up one of the largest armies in Europe for a rainy day \u2014 of course,\u00a0 now that rainy day has come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sweden has far fewer troops, with around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forsvarsmakten.se\/sv\/organisation\/om-var-organisation\/personalsiffror\/\">55,000 in its armed forces<\/a>. Philip Breedlove, a former supreme commander of NATO and commander of the U.S. Air Force in Europe, has advocated the enlargement of NATO and told NBC News this month that if it was left to him, they would be invited to join \u201cabout 1 minute after they applied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThese two nations have worked very diligently to be almost completely compatible with NATO,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir equipment is compatible, their tactics, techniques and procedures are all compatible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The road to deciding on NATO membership has not been smooth for either nation, particularly Sweden, which has made its neutrality a matter of national pride. The influence of its neighbor has been crucial \u2014 more than three quarters <a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/news\/3-12437506\">of Finns<\/a> now support NATO membership, and the enthusiasm is contagious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Finns made us do it \u2014 that\u2019s very true,\u201d said Roger Svensson, a visiting senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund, based in Stockholm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAfter the Second World War, the Finns have been very, very pragmatic. Putin told a meeting of the military alliance of former Soviet states Monday that while he wasn\u2019t threatened by NATO\u2019s expansion northward, the \u201cexpansion of military infrastructure into this territory would certainly provoke our response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This threat of retaliation underlines the need for a security alliance for NATO\u2019s supporters, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The U.K. and other nations have promised to come to the defense of Finland or Sweden should they face attack during the application process. \u201cHe might be shrewd and he might have miscalculated, but he\u2019s not suicidal,\u201d Stubb said of Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">\u201cIf the Russian army is incapable of taking Ukraine, you have to be really out of your mind to contemplate attacking a NATO country at this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Patrick Smith, May 18, 2022 In three short months, analysts say, Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine has reworked European security for decades to come \u2014 and not in Putin\u2019s favor.
