CAA, Ye\u2019s former talent agency, no longer represents him and Def Jam, his longtime record company, said that his contract had expired last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAdidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,\u201d the company <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adidas-group.com\/en\/media\/news-archive\/press-releases\/2022\/adidas-terminates-partnership-ye-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cYe\u2019s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company\u2019s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company, based in Herzogenaurach, Germany, said it would terminate the partnership immediately, end production of Yeezy-branded products and stop payments to Ye and his companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past month, Ye tested the boundaries of acceptable behavior even for a noted provocateur. At his YZYSZN9 Paris Fashion Week show, he wore a shirt with the slogan \u201cWhite Lives Matter,\u201d which the Anti-Defamation League has identified as hate speech and has been adopted by the white supremacist movement. He made antisemitic remarks on social media and in interviews shortly after, including a post on Twitter that said he would go \u201cdeath con 3 ON JEWISH PEOPLE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Blowback quickly followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/09\/business\/media\/kanye-west-antisemitic-racist-twitter-instagram.html\">Instagram and Twitter<\/a> suspended Ye\u2019s accounts. Ari Emanuel of Endeavor, the parent company of the talent agency WME, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6b30de48-75a6-4f73-9454-a6d40b08dd91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called on entertainment companies<\/a> to stop working with Ye. Balenciaga, the fashion house that had partnered with Ye in his Yeezy Gap project (which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/15\/business\/kanye-west-yeezy-gap.html\">came to an end<\/a> in September) and opened its runway show in Paris this month with a modeling stint by Ye, deleted him from its pictures and videos of the show.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<section class=\"css-1at4x3t\">\n<h2 id=\"styln-toplinks-title\" class=\"css-4od1bx\">More on Kanye West<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-9a1njc\">Kanye West, the rapper\u00a0and\u00a0fashion designer who now goes by Ye, has been at the center of several controversies because of his divisive commentary and antisemitic screeds.<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"css-10ikpw\">\n<li><strong>Runway Scandal<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Ye wore a \u201cWhite Lives Matter\u201d T-shirt during a Paris fashion show. Vogue magazine said it would no longer work with Ye, who had appeared on its cover with his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and often attended the Met Gala.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, the studio MRC said it was shelving a documentary on him. Gap, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/15\/business\/kanye-west-yeezy-gap.html?searchResultPosition=2\">had a partnership with Ye<\/a> that ended last month, said on Tuesday that it was taking \u201cimmediate steps\u201d to remove Yeezy Gap products from its stores and had shut down an affiliated website. Also on Tuesday, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaronDonald97\/status\/1585036456908959746?s=20&amp;t=28anZbyH1Q25sj7uu2c_6w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Donald<\/a> of the Los Angeles Rams and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FCHWPO\/status\/1585036696667951107?s=20&amp;t=eDk1xRJMSXdjGeNT0yQsxw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Brown<\/a> of the Boston Celtics said on Twitter that they were cutting ties with Donda Sports, Ye\u2019s marketing agency, because of the antisemitic remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\">\n<div id=\"c-col-editors-picks\" class=\"css-j64t31\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though Adidas was among the first of Yeezy\u2019s corporate partners to announce publicly \u2014 on Oct. 6 \u2014 that it had placed the relationship under \u201creview,\u201d the fact that the company did not move faster to officially sever the ties began to take a toll. The Anti-Defamation League shot back, \u201cWhat more do you need to review?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like many of Ye\u2019s other fashion connections, Adidas seemed to be dragging its feet, perhaps hoping for a public apology that could turn things around. Unlike Ye\u2019s other fashion relationships, which were largely unofficial and based on mutually advantageous appearances, untangling the deal between Yeezy and Adidas would have major contractual and long-term implications; the two brands were intertwined not just publicly, but financially and logistically as well. For Adidas, the partnership was worth more than 10 percent of the more than $2 billion it made in profit last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Anti-Defamation League stepped up its pressure on Adidas this week, after members of a hate group hung a banner reading \u201cKanye is right about the Jews\u201d over a Los Angeles freeway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Germany, the Central Council of Jews called on the company to cut ties to Ye. \u201cThe historical responsibility of Adidas lays not only in the German roots of the company, but also in its entanglement with the Nazi regime,\u201d Josef Schuster, the head of the council, said. \u201cI simply expect such a company to take a strict position regarding antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The founder of Adidas, Adi Dassler, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adidassler.org\/en\/life-and-work\/chronicle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">belonged to the Nazi Party<\/a>, and his factory was forced to produce munitions in the final years of the war. It was only thanks to the sworn statement of a Jewish friend that he was allowed to found the present-day company after World War II ended. Antisemitic statements made online <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/23\/technology\/germany-internet-speech-arrest.html\">can lead to prosecution<\/a> in Germany, and companies with ties to the Nazi era are expected to act to prevent the return of such sentiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As pressure on the company mounted in the United States in recent days, its leadership remained largely silent, frustrating even its own executives. \u201cComing off of the Adidas global week of inclusion, I am feeling anything but included,\u201d Sarah Camhi, a director for trade marketing at Adidas in the United States, wrote in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6990451298189918209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a post on LinkedIn<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She pointed out that while Adidas had severed ties with athletes who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/athletics\/23317715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">failed drug tests<\/a>, or were \u201cdifficult to work with,\u201d it was \u201cunwilling to denounce hate speech, the perpetuation of dangerous stereotypes and blatant racism by one of our top brand partners,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs a member of the Jewish community, I can no longer stay silent on behalf of the brand that employs me,\u201d Ms. Camhi wrote. \u201cNot saying anything, is saying everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shares of Adidas ended the day down 2.4 percent on Tuesday. The company\u2019s stock has fallen over 20 percent in the past month, as Ye embarked on his latest bout of outrageous behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Adidas, which began collaborating with Ye after he left Nike, has long weathered public barbs from the rapper. The value of its partnership with Yeezy, Ye\u2019s company, which encompasses sneakers and clothing, has never been disclosed, but in a recent report David Swartz of the research firm Morningstar estimated it to be worth about \u20ac1.5 billion to \u20ac2 billion. Royalty payments to Ye are also undisclosed, but are \u201clikely to exceed \u20ac100 million per year,\u201d Mr. Swartz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Adidas, working with Ye gave the company a boost of creative cool and credibility that helped attract high-fashion collaborators like Gucci and Balenciaga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company said it expected the move to have a \u201cshort-term negative impact of up to \u20ac250 million\u201d on its profit this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEven without Yeezy, Adidas ships more than 300 million shoes per year,\u201d which brings in nearly $20 billion a year for the company, Mr. Swartz said. Adidas also makes the uniforms for the German, Spanish and Argentine soccer teams that will be playing in the World Cup championship, which will be played in November and December this year, during the Christmas holiday shopping season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ted Deutch, the chief executive of the American Jewish Committee, said he welcomed \u201cthis decisive if belated action by Adidas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe believed that as long as the money kept rolling in he could speak with impunity,\u201d Mr. Deutch said of Ye. \u201cOther companies that profit from associating with West must also disabuse him of that notion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The end of Ye\u2019s partnership with Adidas also comes as his most recent musical ventures have fallen short of previous efforts. His last album, for instance, did not come out on streaming services, but a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stemplayer.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proprietary $200 speaker device<\/a>. Longtime fans have criticized his increasing dalliances with right-wing figures, including more frequent associations with Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson and an agreement to buy the right-leaning social network <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/17\/business\/kanye-west-parler.html\">Parler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ye has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kanye-west-yecosystem-1234613238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated<\/a> that he plans to open his own retail stores, as part of his rejection of the corporate world and creation of what he has reportedly called the \u201cYecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the future of the Yeezy brand is unclear. Ye still owns the Yeezy trademark.
