{"id":14136,"date":"2022-11-24T20:59:53","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T04:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=14136"},"modified":"2022-11-25T21:13:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-26T05:13:57","slug":"ethiopia-survivors-of-sexual-violence-deserve-justice-and-accountability-amnesty-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=14136","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Ethiopia: Survivors of sexual violence deserve justice and accountability&#8221;, Amnesty International"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"u-textRight\">Campaigns, November 24, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Amnesty International is reiterating its call to mediators in the ongoing peace process on Ethiopia to prioritise justice for survivors, including survivors of sexual violence in the two-year conflict.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p>The African Union must pressure the Ethiopian government to ensure justice for victims and survivors of violations especially sexual violence<\/p>\n<p><cite>Flavia Mwangovya, Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes Region.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe African Union must urgently pressure the Ethiopian government to fully cooperate with both regional and international investigative mechanisms on human rights to ensure justice for victims and survivors of violations \u2014 especially sexual violence,\u201d said Flavia Mwangovya, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ethiopian authorities must urgently allow unfettered access to the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE) and the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to enable investigations to take place, and ultimately to\u00a0ensure those responsible for atrocities in Ethiopia\u2019s two-year conflict face justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On 2 November 2022, Amnesty International launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2022\/11\/ethiopia-second-anniversary-of-tigray-conflict\/\">campaign<\/a> which highlights the atrocities committed by all sides to the conflict. It also called on the international community to stand in solidarity with survivors and victims of sexual violence during the conflict.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p>The Ethiopian authorities must allow unfettered access to the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia and the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to enable investigations to take place<\/p>\n<p><cite>Flavia Mwangovya<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wp-embed-responsive\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ETHIOPIA | Survivors of Sexual Violence Deserve Justice\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h5srR7zjOSA?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-16-days-of-activism\"><strong>16 Days of Activism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Amnesty International will also hold an exhibition in Nairobi at the Baraza Media Lab, in which a documentary film will highlight the demands for justice by survivors of sexual violence during the conflict in Ethiopia<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will also be showcased in London on 28 and 29 November 2022, during the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) Conference.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/artspaces.kunstmatrix.com\/en\/exhibition\/10981151\/i-dont-know-if-they-realised-i-was-a-person%E2%80%9D-survivors-of-sexual-violence-in-the\">ENTER THE VIRTUAL EXHIBITION<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Background\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On 2 November 2022, the Government of Ethiopia, and the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF) signed a peace agreement. The accord, however, fails to offer a clear roadmap on how to ensure accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and overlooks rampant impunity in the country, which could lead to violations being repeated.<\/p>\n<p>All parties to the armed conflict in Ethiopia, which pits forces aligned with Ethiopia\u2019s federal government, including the Eritrean army, against those affiliated with Tigray\u2019s regional government led by the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF), have committed serious human rights violations and abuses, including extrajudicial executions, summary killings and sexual violence against women and girls.
