{"id":16207,"date":"2025-04-11T07:47:54","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T14:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=16207"},"modified":"2025-04-11T07:47:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T14:47:56","slug":"children-of-war-six-orphans-1000-mile-journey-across-sudan-in-search-of-safety-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=16207","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Children of war: six orphans\u2019 1,000-mile journey across Sudan in search of safety&#8221;, The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Words and photographs by Karl Schembri in El Geneina, Sudan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fri 11 Apr 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After dysentery killed their mother and the civil war came to their home in Omdurman, Haroun and his young siblings were forced to set off on an epic quest to reach El Geneina.<a href=\"https:\/\/theguardian.org\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2010\/sep\/14\/about-this-site\">About this content<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were huddled together on the bare floor of an abandoned house \u2013 four orphans who had travelled nearly 1,000 miles after having to flee from their home in the city when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/mar\/22\/what-caused-the-civil-war-in-sudan-and-how-has-it-become-one-of-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crises\">Sudan\u2019s brutal civil war erupted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having escaped ferocious fighting around Omdurman, twin city of the capital, Khartoum, they had arrived in Darfur, the sprawling region in western Sudan that has become synonymous with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/jan\/10\/ethnically-targeted-violence-raging-sudan-darfur\">ethnic cleansing<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2023\/dec\/30\/survivors-give-harrowing-testimony-of-darfur-sudan-year-of-hell\">massacres of civilians<\/a>&nbsp;and widespread&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/mar\/14\/darfur-survivors-gather-together-after-ethnically-targeted-campaign\">gang-rape and sexual violence<\/a>&nbsp;during the ongoing conflict between Sudan\u2019s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we couldn\u2019t stay, it was too deadly,\u201d says Asrar, 13, sitting beside three of her siblings, twins Mustafa and Mujtaba, nine, and seven-year-old Fatima.https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2025\/04\/sudan-zip\/giv-32554PO2n24PTmiyM\/?dark=false<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the house, located in the devastated West Darfur city of El Geneina, another two of Asrar\u2019s siblings were trying to make money for them all to eat: Haroun, 21, working at a mechanic\u2019s workshop, while Abdallah, 15, pounded the streets with a donkey selling water all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"1ef94264-1848-43e8-aecd-d622ffd4c8c4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/mar\/22\/what-caused-the-civil-war-in-sudan-and-how-has-it-become-one-of-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crises\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/8cb0dee46c9e0608dc25354bcdc90830dbc711e6\/0_67_5388_3233\/master\/5388.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=97f93c95033edf893bf14f024093451d\" alt=\"A man in a balaclava holding a rifle looks back at the camera while walking along a dirt street\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The six are symbolic of a conflict that has ravaged swathes of Africa\u2019s third-largest country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next week marks the war\u2019s second anniversary. It is already the world\u2019s worst humanitarian crisis and all available evidence confirms it is worsening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"7a83f208-8f5f-4a3e-93a5-eecdaf7198ef\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#img-2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/7e7e5e9f1a336a69fa12da08f11de254a0efbc05\/0_0_6000_4000\/master\/6000.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"Four young African children \u2013 two boys and two girls \u2013 sit in an empty room\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The siblings in their latest home \u2013 a looted house in El Geneina. Asrar, 13, (behind), Fatima, 7, (centre) and twins Mustafa and Mujtaba<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated five million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/sudan\/sudan-crisis-childrens-crisis-0\">children have fled their homes<\/a>&nbsp;since fighting began, with almost 14 million minors in need of humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The orphans of El Geneina do not have to speak to relay the horrors they have endured. Behind them, on the wall of the room where they sleep, are crude drawings depicting the relentless battles that have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/17\/sudan-armed-forces-omdurman-advance\">razed their neighbourhood<\/a>&nbsp;in Omdurman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanks, artillery, drones and pickup trucks with heavy machine-guns mounted (known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalwitness.org\/en\/campaigns\/conflict-resources\/how-the-rsf-got-their-4x4-technicals-the-open-source-intelligence-techniques-behind-our-sudan-expose\/\">\u201ctechnicals\u201d<\/a>) feature heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"07d77182-8785-4f01-a801-eba1e5dab715\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#img-3\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/2c4d6de0ebe02c92dd1fefa1a8468f146602ce5b\/0_0_5712_4284\/master\/5712.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"A worried-looking young African man with his arms folded\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Haroun, 21, the elder brother and only adult in the family<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Asrar and her siblings have been alone since July last year, when their mother, Aisha, died from dysentery at their home in Omdurman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was nowhere to go to treat her. She got sick and was gone in two days,\u201d says Asrar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haroun, arriving back at the house after his workshop shift, adds: \u201cWe were devastated when she died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their father disappeared before the war started, leaving the house one day and never returning. His children have been unable to reach him on his mobile phone; they presume he is dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left alone as the fighting in Omdurman intensified, the children lost their home and were forced to live on the city\u2019s ruined streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pointing at the pictures on the wall, mostly drawn by the twins, Haroun describes how their neighbourhood was subject to repeated drone attacks. \u201cThe fighting was too close for us to stay there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another brother who lives in Libya sent them money by phone to pay a driver to take them to El Geneina, where their parents were from and an elder sister, Israa, 30, still lived.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#EmailSignup-skip-link-20\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"7071a358-a0e8-4b9e-b905-c5484d832a96\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#img-4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/a30bf1a0fbfdf52d5b6023c54a8c98d194700887\/0_0_6000_4000\/master\/6000.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"A child\u2019s drawings on a wall of pickup trucks mounted with guns\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Having seen so much war and destruction in their short lives, the children have covered the walls with drawings of arms and fighting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their journey across the vast country forced them to navigate countless checkpoints and pass through towns emptied of residents. Nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrefugees.org\/emergencies\/sudan\/#:~:text=Since%20the%20conflict%20in%20Sudan,have%20fled%20to%20neighboring%20countries.&amp;text=Love%20has%20the%20power%20to%20transform%20lives.\">13 million people have been displaced<\/a>&nbsp;since the conflict began. \u201cHuge parts of the road felt like a ghost town,\u201d says Haroun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They paid a driver in advance but he abandoned them along the way. \u201cHe left us there with nothing,\u201d Haroun says. \u201cWe had already paid him, and we had run out of money, so we had to sell our mother\u2019s perfumes and clothes and survive on beans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strangers gave them money to help pay for them to make it to El Geneina, with the children forced to sleep on streets for several weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"546638e9-5eb1-4077-8093-299939fc12fb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#img-5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/2325f7c6e506722d8755fa2016447602723b2432\/0_0_3672_2066\/master\/3672.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"The walls of a compound with barbed wire and metal gates\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The abandoned house in El Geneina where the children are living. They found their sister\u2019s house in ruins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On arriving in the Darfur city last month, their elder sister could not be found, most likely having fled across the border to Chad. They found her house in ruins and moved into a nearby derelict house that had been left completely bare after being looted. A threadbare carpet serves as their bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite escaping Omdurman, life in El Geneina is also fraught with risk. The city has witnessed myriad war crimes, including one of the worst atrocities of the war \u2013 a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2024\/05\/09\/sudan-ethnic-cleansing-west-darfur\">frenzied episode<\/a>&nbsp;of violence, rape and looting by the RSF in 2023, in which almost 15,000 people were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, the US state department formally declared that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/07\/us-determines-sudan-paramilitary-genocide\">RSF had committed genocide<\/a>&nbsp;during the civil war, committing \u201csystematic atrocities\u201d, many in West Darfur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"1073abfc-8acd-493c-9c7c-23de2992c118\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/11\/sudan-war-children-orphans-displaced-journey-safety-darfur#img-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/e80f6a2f26d1c1e4faeedfafd633320c8ef6ae4c\/0_0_3672_2066\/master\/3672.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"Children\u2019s drawings on a wall of people, one firing a pistol\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Even the children\u2019s apparently innocent drawings of people feature guns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the orphans, hopes of a stable future are bleak.
