{"id":1642,"date":"2017-06-29T05:46:41","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T12:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=1642"},"modified":"2017-06-29T05:46:41","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T12:46:41","slug":"travel-ban-2-0-set-to-begin-thursday-evening-cnn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=1642","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Travel ban 2.0 set to begin Thursday evening&#8221; CNN"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">By Laura Jarrett and Elsie Labott, June 29, 2017<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\"><cite class=\"el-editorial-source\">(CNN)\u00a0<\/cite>After months of winding through the courts, the so-called &#8220;watered down,&#8221; revised version of President Donald Trump&#8217;s fiercely litigated travel ban <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/26\/politics\/travel-ban-supreme-court\/index.html\">will finally go into effect at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Here&#8217;s what to expect for version 2.0:<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">\n<h3>Who can&#8217;t enter the US?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The test for foreign nationals under the Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling is whether one has a &#8220;credible claim of bona fide relationship&#8221; with either an entity (like a school or a job) or a person living in the US (such as a spouse).<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">A hotel reservation, for example, will not constitute a &#8220;bona fide relationship&#8221; under the executive order, but an academic lecturer invited to speak in the US will be exempt.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">If you can&#8217;t sufficiently establish such a close relationship, you are banned for 90 days if you are from Libya, Syria, Iran, Somalia, Yemen and Sudan, and 120 days if you are a refugee from any country.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The new guidelines, sent to US embassies and consulates on Wednesday, say that applicants must prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling in the US in order to enter the country, according to a cable obtained by CNN.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The cable further describes that other family members &#8212; including fiancees, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and any other &#8220;extended&#8221; family members will not be considered &#8220;close family&#8221; under the executive order.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The State Department criteria also applies to all refugees currently awaiting approval for admission to the US.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">However, these guidelines have not yet been posted by the State Department or the Department of Homeland Security and could be subject to change.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Advocacy groups such as Amnesty International plan to send researchers to US airports, such as Dulles International Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport on Thursday, to monitor developments and observe implementation of the ban in case any disputes arise.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/26\/us\/resettled-refugees-america-views\/index.html\">Refugees: We thought America valued diversity<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">\n<h3>Who is exempt from the ban?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The following categories of travelers will excluded from the travel ban, according to the cable:<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">\n<ul class=\"cnn_rich_text\">\n<li>US citizens<\/li>\n<li>Legal permanent residents (aka green card holders)<\/li>\n<li>Current visa holders<\/li>\n<li>Any visa applicant who was in the US as of June 26<\/li>\n<li>Dual nationals<\/li>\n<li>Anyone granted asylum<\/li>\n<li>Any refugee already admitted to the US<\/li>\n<li>Foreign nationals with &#8220;bona fide&#8221; family, educational or business tie to the US<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Importantly, visas that have already been approved will not be revoked.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The executive order also permits the issuance of a visa to anyone who would otherwise be excluded on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of DHS and the State Department.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Homeland Security spokesperson David Lapan confirmed to CNN that the President&#8217;s revised executive order &#8220;would not affect persons who arrive at our ports of entry with legitimate travel documents.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;The professional men and women of DHS expect &#8216;business as usual&#8217; at our ports of entry upon implementation of the March 6 EO,&#8221; he added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/28\/politics\/us-congress-north-korea-travel-ban\/index.html\">US Congress readies North Korean travel ban<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">\n<h3>Why is this happening?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The intent behind the executive order was hotly debated for the past several months.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">On the campaign trail, then-candidate Trump called for a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/08\/politics\/trump-muslim-ban-campaign-website\/index.html\">total and complete shutdown of Muslims<\/a>&#8221; entering the US.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">But the text of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2017\/03\/06\/executive-order-protecting-nation-foreign-terrorist-entry-united-states\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> states that &#8220;additional scrutiny&#8221; is required for foreign nationals traveling from the six identified nations because &#8220;the conditions in these countries present heightened threats.
