Gavin Newsom on Tuesday night accused President Trump of intentionally fanning the flames of the Los Angeles protests and \u201cpulling a military dragnet across\u201d the city endangering peaceful protesters and targeting hardworking immigrant families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/1c9a5f4\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/5472x3648+0+0\/resize\/1200x800!\/quality\/75\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fef%2Fed%2F18aa3bcf46eb879621e589fe561e%2Fcalifornia-newsom-29294.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a dark suit and tie, with a serious demeanor, next to two people\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democratic governor\u2019s comments were a forceful rebuke to the president\u2019s claims that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-06-10\/businesses-burglarized-as-immigration-protests-continue\">deploying the California National Guard and U.S. Marines<\/a>\u00a0to the city was necessary to control the civil unrest.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s government isn\u2019t protecting our communities \u2014 they\u2019re traumatizing our communities,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cAnd that seems to be the entire point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pXQQNUeb4Sw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted his video address to California on social media&nbsp;<\/a>hours after Trump said at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina that he sent in troops to protect immigration agents from \u201cthe attacks of a vicious and violent mob.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The picture Trump painted of the federal government\u2019s role in the protests against immigration raids marks a sharp contrast to Newsom\u2019s assertion that state and local law enforcement were successfully keeping the peace before federal authorities deployed \u201ctear gas,\u201d \u201cflash-bang grenades\u201d and \u201crubber bullets\u201d on Angelenos exercising their constitutional right to free speech and assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Trump \u201cillegally\u201d called up the California National Guard, Newsom said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cThat\u2019s when the downward spiral began. He doubled down on his dangerous National Guard deployment by fanning the flames even harder. Rob Bonta filed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2025-06-10\/california-asks-court-for-temporary-restraining-order-to-block-marine-deployment-in-l-a\">a request for a restraining order<\/a>&nbsp;earlier Tuesday asking a federal judge to call off the \u201cDepartment of Defense\u2019s illegal militarization of Los Angeles and the takeover of a California National Guard unit.\u201d The request came the day after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2025-06-09\/california-newsom-sue-trump-say-he-overstepped-with-national-guard-mobilization-in-l-a\">California filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;alleging that the deployment of the guard without the governor\u2019s consent violated the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After returning to Washington, Trump commented on the \u201cgood relationship\u201d he\u2019s always had with Newsom, before blaming the governor for the unrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis should never have been allowed to start, and if we didn\u2019t get involved, Los Angeles would be burning down right now,\u201d Trump said, and then made a reference to the deadly wildfires in the Los Angeles area in January. \u201cJust as the houses burned down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the military is in the city to de-escalate the situation and control what he described as paid \u201cinsurrectionists,\u201d \u201cagitators\u201d and \u201ctroublemakers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of people all over the world watching Los Angeles,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got the Olympics, so we have this guy allowing this to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, Trump said his top border policy advisor Tom Homan should follow through on threats to arrest the governor. Newsom immediately jumped on the comment, comparing the federal administration to an \u201cauthoritarian regime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never thought I\u2019d hear those words. Honestly, Democrat, Republican. He warned that \u201cother states are next.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this moment, we all need to stand up and be held to account, a higher level of accountability,\u201d Newsom said, imploring protesters to exercise free-speech rights peacefully. \u201cI know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress and fear. But I want you to know that you are the antidote to that fear and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat Donald Trump wants most is your fealty. Your silence. To be complicit in this moment.
