{"id":2238,"date":"2017-11-17T05:34:51","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T13:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=2238"},"modified":"2017-11-17T05:34:51","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T13:34:51","slug":"gillibrand-says-bill-clinton-should-have-resigned-over-lewinsky-affair-the-new-york-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=2238","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Gillibrand Says Bill Clinton Should Have Resigned Over Lewinsky Affair&#8221;, The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jennifer Steinhower, November 16, 2017<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"265\" data-total-count=\"265\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, who holds Hillary Clinton\u2019s former seat, said on Thursday that Bill Clinton should have resigned the presidency after his inappropriate relationship with an intern came to light nearly 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"176\" data-total-count=\"441\">Asked directly if she believed Mr. Clinton should have stepped down at the time, Ms. Gillibrand took a long pause and said, \u201cYes, I think that is the appropriate response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"144\" data-total-count=\"585\">But she also appeared to signal that what is currently considered a fireable offense may have been more often overlooked during the Clinton era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"316\" data-total-count=\"901\">\u201cThings have changed today, and I think under those circumstances there should be a very different reaction,\u201d Ms. Gillibrand said. \u201cAnd I think in light of this conversation, we should have a very different conversation about President Trump, and a very different conversation about allegations against him.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-1\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"172\" data-total-count=\"1073\">A spokesman later said that Ms. Gillibrand was trying to underscore that Mr. Clinton\u2019s actions, had they happened in the current era, should have compelled him to resign.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"252\" data-total-count=\"1325\">Still, it was a remarkable statement from a senator who enthusiastically backed Mrs. Clinton\u2019s presidential bid last year but has been deeply involved in legislative efforts to curb sexual abuse and harassment in the military and on college campuses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-interrupter\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"185\" data-total-count=\"1510\">Ms. Gillibrand, who has longstanding ties to the Clintons, is the highest-profile elected Democratic official to say that Mr. Clinton should have stepped down as a result of his affair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"411\" data-total-count=\"1921\">Ms. Gillibrand\u2019s remarks came during an interview for a New York Times podcast, \u201cThe New Washington,\u201d which will air on Saturday. They came hours after Senator Al Franken, Democrat of Minnesota, apologized for groping and kissing a radio host without her consent during a U.S.O. tour in 2006, two years before he was elected. Mr. Franken is now facing demands for an ethics investigation into his conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"202\" data-total-count=\"2123\">\u201cIt\u2019s very disturbing,\u201d Ms. Gillibrand said of Mr. Franken. \u201cI was very disappointed. But it\u2019s important that survivors are coming out and speaking truth to power and telling their stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"325\" data-total-count=\"2448\">Earlier, she said she would give all the donations her campaign had received from Mr. Franken\u2019s political action committee to Protect Our Defenders, which helps those assaulted in the military.
