{"id":2689,"date":"2018-03-02T02:29:46","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T10:29:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=2689"},"modified":"2018-03-02T02:29:46","modified_gmt":"2018-03-02T10:29:46","slug":"burma-blocks-entry-for-uk-government-committee-after-rohingya-crisis-criticism-the-telegraph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=2689","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Burma blocks entry for UK government committee after Rohingya crisis criticism&#8221;, The Telegraph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Nicola Smith in Taipei, London, 1 March 2108<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">T<\/span>he Burmese authorities have been accused of blocking a British parliamentary fact-finding trip to the country after UK MPs were critical of their role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/02\/10\/rohingya-must-allowed-return-homes-warns-boris-johnson\/\">Rohingya crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Commons International Development Committee had been due to hold a series of meetings with senior military and civilian leaders, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/02\/11\/boris-johnson-urges-aung-san-suu-kyi-allow-independent-probe\/\">Aung San Suu Kyi<\/a>, and also to scrutinise British aid projects in Burma.<\/p>\n<p data-mediaconductor-processed=\"true\">In January the same committee produced a damning report on the treatment of the Rohingyas, highlighting evidence of sexual violence during the military crackdown on the Muslim minority, which began in late August and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/14\/least-6700-rohingya-including-hundreds-children-killed-first\/\">caused nearly 700,000 people to flee<\/a> to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>Committee chair and Labour MP Stephen Twigg suggested that the Burmese embassy\u2019s failure to provide visas for the group was linked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely disappointed. It is hard to escape the conclusion that this is a direct consequence of our report on the Rohingya,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>r Twigg added that the refusal to allow the committee to enter Burma hampered its job of overseeing projects funded by a \u00a3100 million Department for International Development (DFID) aid programme for 2018-19.<\/p>\n<p>MPs had been due to visit health and education projects in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/destinations\/asia\/myanmar\/articles\/burma-myanmar-rakhine-is-it-safe-to-visit\/\">Rakhine state<\/a>, home to the Rohingya minority, and in the Magway region of central Burma.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">I<\/span>n January the committee\u2019s report raised \u201cgrave concern\u201d about plans to repatriate refugees, decrying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/02\/23\/burmese-government-bulldoze-scores-rohingya-villages\/\">\u201chuge human tragedy\u201d that had been created by Burma\u2019s actions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">M<\/span>Ps cautioned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/01\/22\/rohingyarefugees-made-wait-repatriation-delayed\/\">repatriation plans<\/a> were \u201cwell apace\u201d without guarantees of protection or that the first batch of returnees would be voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>An agreement to return the refugees in stages has been drawn up between the Burmese and Bangladeshi governments, but a push from Naypyidaw to begin the repatriation in late January was put on ice for logistical reasons.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">F<\/span>ears of being forced to return have swept the camps sheltering traumatised refugees. Community leaders are demanding that Burma first guarantee the Rohingya long-denied citizenship and include them on the list of the country\u2019s recognised ethnic groups.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday hundreds of Rohingya living in the no man\u2019s land between the two countries abruptly fled into Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">T<\/span>hey claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/01\/11\/burma-admits-troops-involved-killing-rohingya-muslims-found\/\">Burmese soldiers<\/a> had used loudhailers to threaten and order them to leave. About 6,000 Rohingya have been living on the thin strip of land between Bangladesh and Burma since August.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks they have come under pressure from Burmese soldiers who have stepped up patrols along the barbed wire border fence.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">C<\/span>ommunity leader Dil Mohammed told AFP that people were beginning to panic. \u201cWe can\u2019t now sleep peacefully.
