It was the culmination of a rapprochement that began at the New Year and led to the Koreas marching together at the Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>The envoys then travelled to Washington to brief Mr Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside the White House after the meeting, South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong said that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Mr Kim was prepared to sit down with the US president<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">North Korea was &#8220;committed to denuclearisation&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">It would halt all nuclear and missile tests<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">It understood that US-South Korean military drills &#8220;must continue&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/asia_pacific\/north-korean-leader-kim-jong-un-has-invited-president-trump-to-a-meeting\/2018\/03\/08\/021cb070-2322-11e8-badd-7c9f29a55815_story.html?utm_term=.7db57196da11\">In a statement sent to the Washington Post, North Korea&#8217;s UN ambassador said the &#8220;courageous decision&#8221; of Mr Kim would help secure &#8220;peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the East Asia region&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-43340066\">South Korea statement on Kim-Trump meeting in full<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no indication yet of where the Trump-Kim talks might take place, but the Korean border&#8217;s demilitarised zone (DMZ) and Beijing are seen as likely options.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What could be on the agenda?<\/h2>\n<p>Clearly for the US, South Korea and allied nations, denuclearisation is the key issue.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has been isolated for decades because of its pursuit of nuclear weapons, in defiance of international laws.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-17823706\">The North has carried out six nuclear tests<\/a> and has missiles that could reach the US.<\/p>\n<p>However, the BBC&#8217;s Laura Bicker in Seoul says it is important to note that North Korea has not yet promised to abandon its nuclear weapons completely.<\/p>\n<p>The North&#8217;s well-documented human rights abuses are also a key issue for the US.<\/p>\n<p>So what does the North want? An easing, if not removal, of sanctions certainly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-43343870\/former-british-ambassador-to-n-korea-warns-of-dangers-of-trump-kim-meeting\">A former British ambassador to North Korea, John Everard, told the BBC<\/a>there must be a suspicion that Mr Kim might be trying to play Mr Trump to try to &#8220;get him to say across the table things that North Korea has been asking for for a long time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43340243\">Analysis: Did sanctions push North Korea into talks?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43340242\">Asian markets rally on US-NK talks hopes<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-41174689\">What missiles does North Korea have? <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These could include a peace treaty to finally end the Korean War and a promise that if North Korea denuclearised then the US would finally withdraw its troops from South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The US has tens of thousands of military personnel there and the massive annual joint war games infuriate the North because it believes they are preparation for invasion.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What have the other players said?<\/h2>\n<p>The reaction has been positive, if cautious among some:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">China&#8217;s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said it welcomed the &#8220;positive signals&#8221; from the US and North Korea, saying: &#8220;We&#8217;re glad that they have finally made this first step&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the development was a &#8220;step in the right direction&#8221;, adding: &#8220;It should not just be a meeting, it should open up a way to resuming a fully fledged diplomatic process&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Japan&#8217;s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would &#8220;keep putting maximum pressure until North Korea takes concrete actions toward denuclearisation&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">The EU said it was a &#8220;positive development&#8221;, while a spokesman for UK PM Theresa May said Britain would keep up the pressure on the North<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Have talks like this happened in the past?<\/h2>\n<p>No sitting US president has ever met a North Korean leader, but there have been repeated attempts to get North Korea to denuclearise.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-41150291\">North Korea: Does a nuclear test mean war?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-43063399\">Are North and South Korea friends again?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last major effort &#8211; the Six Party talks &#8211; collapsed in 2008, largely because North Korea refused to allow inspectors to verify that it had shut down its nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p>A number of bids to restart the talks after that also collapsed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-43345209\">BBC News<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London, 9 March 2018 The US has expressed surprise at the &#8220;dramatic&#8221; shift in stance by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that has seen President Donald Trump agree to talks.
