Berta C\u00e1ceres, Goldman Environmental Prize Recipient, 2015<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n During this year of of anniversaries of assasinations that changed history, it is important to remember all the assasinations that are part of changing history that virtually no one ever hears about or remembers.<\/p>\n And often, the activists murdered are women of color in nations we so often pay no attention to either. But these heroes who lay down their lives are creating change all the way to the top of the dog eat dog food chain in the ancient war of haves against the have nots that is playing out at least the start of its final battles today, because of the nature of the one world battlefield.<\/p>\n A well-known, not well-known example is\u00a0Berta C\u00e1ceres. She exemplified the strugles for environmental justice, gender equality, racial justice, economic justice, human rights, control of the land and numerous intersections of issues of equality and sustainability that World Campaign tries to bring into focus.<\/p>\n Berta C\u00e1ceres was murdered in Honduras in 2016–that last year when there seemed any hope of civil discourse (which instead degenerated to new lows), much less focus in any larger sense on the majority of the people of the planet and the sustainability of the planet itself.<\/p>\n The murder of Berta C\u00e1ceres\u00a0was an enraging and heartbreaking loss, well reported for a minute, or more in depth for those who dive deeper for their news. But not even a blip on the radar for most. Here’s why it should be, not just morally, but because history chose these unknown warriors and the people they represent as the winners a long time ago. Faster than we think, even at this moment of the great regression, like all the other impossibilities of the past 50 years alone. Which should make it pretty easy to figure out where each of us will stand or lie in a death rattle based on our current positions or immediate choices.<\/p>\n In art, the scene was portrayed in the film\u00a0Beatriz at Dinner <\/em>last year\u00a0<\/em>with the poor immigrant Mexican woman played by Selma Hayak telling the rich white master of the universe played by John Lithgow that the gates were not going to keep the hordes of the have nots out–and the reckoning that would follow.<\/p>\n The Guardian tonight (Friday morning in London) published an article about\u00a0Berta C\u00e1ceres and all the issues surrounding her activism and death, as they continue to play out today.<\/p>\n Liz Ford and Sam Jones do a superb job reporting about all the above in their piece:<\/p>\n “Bank faces lawsuit over Honduras dam project as spirit of Berta C\u00e1ceres lives on”<\/a><\/p>\n Organisation co-founded by murdered activist sues Dutch bank over support for Agua Zarca dam on Gualcarque river<\/em><\/p>\n The organisation co-founded by the murdered environmental activist Berta C\u00e1ceres<\/a> is taking legal action against a Dutch bank over its involvement in the construction of a controversial dam project in Honduras.<\/p>\n The Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras (Copinh<\/a>), along with the C\u00e1ceres family, announced the suit against the Dutch development bank FMO, one of the backers of the Agua Zarca dam on the Gualcarque river, in the Netherlands on Thursday.<\/p>\n The lawsuit says the bank failed to observe the human rights of local people affected by the project and disregarded warnings about human rights violations perpetrated in the area, and raised by C\u00e1ceres before her death in 2016.<\/p>\n FMO suspended loans to the company after C\u00e1ceres\u2019 death, pending a review. Last year, following protests by members of Copinh, the bank, along with the Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation, Finnfund, withdrew from the project<\/a> \u201cto reduce international and local tensions in the area\u201d. FMO and Finnfund had provided $15m (\u00a311m) to the project. A third backer, the Central American Bank of Economic Integration (Cabei), which had given $24m, has also withdrawn support.<\/p>\n C\u00e1ceres\u2019 daughter, Bertha, told the Guardian that the legal action against FMO was designed to compel those providing international aid financing to abide by their responsibilities.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got to call things by their name: it was negligence that led to violence and even murder,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it could also be a precedent to make sure that these crimes don\u2019t happen again in other communities that are fighting against European companies and European banks, who don\u2019t take these violent situations seriously when it comes to setting up their projects.<\/p>\n \u201cThe lawsuit is also intended to make them do something they\u2019ve never wanted to do before, which is to say they\u2019re sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n Channa Samkalden, the lawyer leading the action against FMO in the Netherlands<\/a>, told a press conference that the bank\u2019s funding provided the company leading the construction work, Desarrollos Energ\u00e9ticos SA (Desa), \u201cwith the means and the reason to spread \u2026 violence and intimidation in order to break the resistance against the dam\u201d.<\/p>\n Samkalden said: \u201cFMO insists on having fully adopted the different relevant international principles aimed at preventing and mitigating human right violations \u2026 On the basis of these principles, FMO was obliged to do a proper and thorough due diligence to prevent any negative impact that may result from its investments.<\/p>\n \u201cSo FMO had a duty of care towards Berta C\u00e1ceres, her children and the inhabitants in Honduras<\/a> to make sure that this investment would come to the benefit of the Honduran people and would not lead to human rights infringements.\u201d<\/p>\n Papers are expected to be served in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n In a statement, FMO said: \u201cBerta C\u00e1ceres was a highly respected defender of human rights whose murder is a tragedy. We express our deepest sympathies to her family and friends. We reiterate our call on the Honduran authorities to bring those responsible for this terrible crime to justice.<\/p>\n \u201cFMO is a development bank that empowers entrepreneurs to build a better world, sometimes under the most difficult circumstances. FMO commissioned an independent expert mission, acted upon its findings to reduce community tensions, and exited the project.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are deeply committed to respecting human rights in all of our projects. FMO recognises the right to a legal process and trusts that the courts will confirm that FMO acted in good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n C\u00e1ceres, who won the Goldman environmental prize<\/a> for her work with Copinh, which she co-founded 25 years ago, was murdered<\/a> in her home in the early hours of 3 March 2016. She had led the protest against construction of the dam along the Gualcarque river in R\u00edo Blanco, which is considered sacred by the Lenca people. Mexican activist Gustavo Castro Soto was injured in the attack.<\/p>\n Eight men have been charged<\/a> with her murder, two of whom worked at Desa.<\/p>\n Desa has always denied any involvement in the death of C\u00e1ceres and in November dismissed a report by an expert group of lawyers<\/a> that alleged senior management involvement. The company said<\/a> information in the report had been taken out of context and \u201cdoes not reflect reality\u201d.<\/p>\n Last week, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Michel Forst, called for \u201cstrong, urgent action\u201d to be taken to protect activists in Honduras.<\/p>\n \u201cImpunity, lack of active participation and collusion between powerful interests are deadly ingredients that have turned Honduras into a dangerous place for human rights defenders,\u201d he said in a statement<\/a> after visiting the country.<\/p>\n \u201cI am extremely worried by the absence of a safe and enabling environment for all human rights defenders, especially those working on sexual and reproductive rights, sexual orientation and gender identity, journalism, land and indigenous rights, and those advocating on education issues.\u201dC\u00e1ceres\u2019 daughter, who now leads Copinh, survived an armed attack<\/a> on herself and two colleagues last year.<\/p>\n Figures published this week show there were 2,197 attacks on female rights activists registered in 2015 and 2016 across Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua. Twenty-one were murdered and 44 suffered an attempt on their life.<\/p>\n More than 50% of attacks were carried out by the police, armed forces or the authorities, and fewer than 40% were reported to the police, according to a report<\/a> published by the MesoAmerica Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders<\/a> (IM-Defensoras).<\/p>\n Women defending land and the environment were subject to the greatest number of assaults, and 10% of attackers were linked to companies and security agents, found IM-Defensoras, a coalition of seven organisations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Berta C\u00e1ceres, Goldman Environmental Prize Recipient, 2015 During this year of of anniversaries of assasinations that changed history, it is important to remember all the assasinations that are part of changing history that virtually no one ever hears about or remembers.
