{"id":4065,"date":"2018-08-14T06:54:49","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T13:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4065"},"modified":"2018-08-14T06:54:49","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T13:54:49","slug":"unicef-appeals-for-end-to-war-on-children-in-syria-and-yemen-un-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4065","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;UNICEF appeals for end to \u2018war on children\u2019 in Syria and Yemen&#8221;, UN News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>13 August 2018<\/p>\n<p><em>Attacks against children caught in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen must stop, the UN children\u2019s agency, UNICEF, appealed on Monday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a tightly worded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/mena\/press-releases\/does-anyone-care\">statement<\/a>, UNICEF pointed out that since Sunday, 28 children were reported killed in Idlib and western Aleppo, located in northern Syria.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll included an entire family of seven.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, three UNICEF-supported health facilities were also attacked, two of which are now out of service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe war on children in Syria is putting at least one\u00a0million children at risk in Idlib alone,\u201d said the statement, attributable to Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n<p>These latest incidents follow the deaths of 21 children in Yemen last week, killed when their school bus was hit during an airstrike.<\/p>\n<p>For Juliet Touma, UNICEF Chief of Communications in the region, they represent an escalation in attacks on children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s obviously a war on children,\u201d she told <em>UN News<\/em>, explaining that ongoing fighting means children in the two countries are being deprived of basic rights such as access to healthcare and education.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian crisis began nearly eight years ago with civilians continuing \u201cto bear the brunt of a conflict marked by unparalleled suffering, destruction and disregard for human life,\u201d according to the UN humanitarian affairs office, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unocha.org\/syrian-arab-republic\/about-ocha-syria\">OCHA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF reported that more than five million children there require humanitarian assistance, with nearly half forced to flee their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA, said three years of fighting in Yemen means nearly two-thirds of the population requires some form of aid relief or protection support to survive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross the region there are about 30 million children who need humanitarian assistance,\u201d Ms. Touma said, also referring to the situation in places such as Libya, Sudan and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, children under attack\u2026and that needs to come to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2018\/08\/1016922\">UN News<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>13 August 2018 Attacks against children caught in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen must stop, the UN children\u2019s agency, UNICEF, appealed on Monday.
