{"id":4137,"date":"2018-08-17T23:48:47","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T06:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4137"},"modified":"2018-08-18T07:15:38","modified_gmt":"2018-08-18T14:15:38","slug":"post3-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4137","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;When a Woman Is Accused of Sexual Harassment&#8221;, The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Letters, Aug. 18, 2018<\/p>\n<p><em>Are feminists who defended a female professor who was found to have harassed a male student being hypocritical?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">To the Editor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Re \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/13\/nyregion\/sexual-harassment-nyu-female-professor.html\">A Female Professor, Her Male Student and the Limits of #MeToo<\/a>\u201d (front page, Aug. 14):<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Nimrod Reitman\u2019s very credible accusations against Avital Ronell point to what many women and men know firsthand: Women, too, can be abusers, and can inflict as much pain, humiliation and shame as any man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">The #MeToo movement has clearly been instrumental in surfacing the grotesque sexual misdeeds of men. However, it has utterly failed to reckon in any serious way with the reality of female-on-female and female-on-male sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Women are not angels, and men are not sadists; predator and prey are not gendered roles. And until #MeToo acknowledges and grapples with this, it will remain open to the fully justified charge of hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Emily J. Macaux<br \/>\nEast Greenwich, R.I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">To the Editor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">I was grateful to read \u201cA Female Professor, Her Male Student and the Limits of #MeToo.\u201d At the same time, I was personally and professionally disappointed by many prominent academics\u2019 responses to Nimrod Reitman\u2019s disclosure of Avital Ronell\u2019s misconduct, including a letter sent to New York University in defense of Professor Ronell.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">As an academic and anti-violence advocate, I believe that universities must take such reports seriously. Holding women accountable for sexual misconduct is consistent with the historical aims of Title IX and does not twist its feminist logic, as some critics have suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Personally, as a transgender man, I have experienced sexual violence while embodying different genders, perpetrated by people of different genders.
