{"id":4413,"date":"2018-09-05T02:27:33","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T09:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4413"},"modified":"2018-09-05T02:27:33","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T09:27:33","slug":"iran-husband-of-hunger-striking-human-rights-lawyer-nasrin-sotoudeh-arrested-amnesty-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=4413","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Iran: Husband of hunger-striking human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh arrested&#8221;, Amnesty International"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>News, Media Centre, London, 4 September 2018<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the arrest in Iran this morning of Reza Khandan, the husband of prominent jailed human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, Amnesty International&#8217;s Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Philip Luther, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst the authorities jail Nasrin Sotoudeh on bogus charges, then harass, intimidate and threaten her family and friends, and now arrest her husband. These callous actions illustrate the lengths to which Iranian authorities will go to silence human rights lawyers, even targeting their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iranian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release both Nasrin Sotoudeh and Reza Khandan. They must drop all charges against them and stop their harassment of this family once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe international community, including the EU given its ongoing dialogue with Iran, must condemn in the strongest terms the arbitrary arrest and detention of both Reza Khandan and Nasrin Sotoudeh, and do everything in their power to expedite the release of these two human rights defenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reza Khandan\u2019s lawyer, Mohammad Moghimi, said in a Facebook post that after his arrest, Reza Khandan was taken to the Office of the Prosecutor in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison where he was charged with \u201cspreading propaganda against the system\u201d and \u201ccolluding to commit crimes against national security.\u201d He has also been accused of \u201cpromoting the practice of appearing in public without a veil\u201d because of his support for the Iranian women\u2019s campaign against forced veiling (hijab).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to his arrest, Reza Khandan had raised concerns on Facebook about human rights violations in Iran, including the imprisonment of human rights defenders and the prosecution of women who have campaigned against forced veiling (<em>hijab<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Reza Khandan has publicly campaigned for the release of his wife, Nasrin Sotoudeh, one of Iran\u2019s most prominent human rights lawyers, who was arrested on 13 June. She is currently being held in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison, charged with several national security offences, including \u201cinsulting the Supreme Leader\u201d and \u201cspreading propaganda against the system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The charges against her stem from her work defending women who have been prosecuted for peacefully protesting against the abusive, discriminatory and degrading practice of forced veiling (<em>hijab<\/em>).
