When scientists went back to look at historical weather patterns, they reported Harvey dumped 20 percent more rain than it typically would have. The culprit: climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we know that Harvey wasn\u2019t an outlier. A new study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0673-2\">published Wednesday in Nature by the same lab<\/a>, reports that climate change intensified the rains of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria by between 4 and 9 percent. The researchers predict that future warming could increase rainfall totals for the most extreme hurricanes and tropical cyclones by up to 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Humans can also affect these torrential rains through how we engineer cities. A second analysis, also published today in Nature, <a href=\"https:\/\/press.nature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/2018\/11\/41586_2018_676_OnlinePDF_300AVillarini.pdf\">found the urbanization of the Houston area<\/a> \u2014 namely its skyscrapers and the pervasive use of pavement and other concrete surfaces \u2014 made Harvey\u2019s rain dump and subsequent flooding worse.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how both teams used supercomputers to analyze these superstorms and what their research means for future storms.<\/p>\n<h2>What the scientists did<\/h2>\n<p>To model how a changing climate impacts tropical weather, climate scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/eesa.lbl.gov\/profiles\/christina-marie-patricola\/\">Christina Patricola<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/crd.lbl.gov\/departments\/computational-science\/ccmc\/staff\/staff-members\/michael-wehner\/\">Michael Wehner<\/a> of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory first had to model real life hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s actually pretty challenging to be able to diagnose how climate change may be influencing tropical cyclones so far,\u201d Patricola said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of missing data or potentially missing data before the satellite era. Before satellites, a lot of observations were taken by ships, so you can imagine sometimes they would just miss a tropical cyclone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recreating those storms with computers can help fill in gaps in those hurricane observations. To do that, the team used supercomputers to model 15 major tropical cyclones that formed in the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian Oceans in the last threes decades. Storms included Hurricanes Andrew, Katrina and Matthew as well as Typhoon Haiyan and Tropical Cyclone Gafilo.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers simulated each storms\u2019 formation, track and wind speeds and compared them to the real-life events.<\/p>\n<div class=\"body-text\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B8ueAsLV-tY?feature=oembed\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>The clouds of a simulated Hurricane Katrina tracked along the storm\u2019s actual path, noted in red dots. Video courtesy: Berkeley Lab <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once confident in their ability to mirror reality, Patricola and Wehner tweaked the climate inputs so that the model behaved in a cooler, pre-industrial world \u2014 as if climate change didn\u2019t exist. They then re-ran the simulations for the 15 tropical cyclones under the warmer ocean and atmosphere temperatures we experience because of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Running such simulations is a time-consuming process, given each test requires weeks of setup and a full day to run. But modeling the storms under cooler and warmer conditions allowed the team to better understand how climate change impacted the storms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page__body page__body--with-sidebar\">\n<article class=\"post__article\">\n<div class=\"post__col \">\n<div class=\"post__col-right\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"body-text\">\n<p>\u201cWe simply cannot reproduce the same storm twice in history,\u201d said Utah State University climate scientist Simon Wang, who was not involved with the study. \u201cBut in a way, they\u2019re doing as close to an apples-to-apples comparison of what the same hurricanes would look like in the world without climate warming and in a world with very real climate warming.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What they found<\/h2>\n<p>Patricola and Wehner concluded climate change increased the average rainfall of Hurricanes Katrina, Irma and Maria between 4 and 9 percent. Climate change, however, appeared to have no effect on storm intensities, namely wind speed and sea level pressure.<\/p>\n<p>In the cases of Irma and Maria, climate change also concentrated the rain towards the center of the storm rather than the outer regions. Photo by Adalberto Roque\/AFP\/Getty Imagines<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That pattern was even more pronounced when Patricola and Wehner ran the simulations for a world 5.8 to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the one we\u2019re in right now \u2014 an impact that could spell more headaches for future disaster management teams.<\/p>\n<p>The study also suggests that future climate warming could increase the intensity of strong storms. Patricola and Wehner estimated that peak wind speeds in the 15 storms they analyzed could increase by up to 29 miles per hour as climate temperatures climb. In the warmest scenario \u2014 a 5.8 to 7.2 degree Fahrenheit increase by the end of the century \u2014 rainfall levels for most storms rose between 15 and 30 percent, according to their model.<\/p>\n<p>The basic message, Wang said: \u201cIf the warming persists, the odds for each incoming hurricane to become stronger, more destructive, [is] going to increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why it matters<\/h2>\n<p>This type of hurricane modeling is a burgeoning field, but evidence that humans have already impacted recent major storms is growing\u2013 sometimes in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n<p>In the second study published today, researchers from the University of Iowa and Princeton University found that Houston\u2019s tall buildings promoted Hurricane Harvey\u2019s heavier rainfall by increasing atmospheric drag.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_225843\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-225843\" src=\"https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2017\/08\/hurricane-harvey_RTX3DL7M-e1503940615817.jpg\" alt=\"Interstate highway 45 is submerged from the effects of Hurricane Harvey seen during widespread flooding in Houston, Texas, U.S. August 27, 2017. Photo by Richard Carson\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Houston\u2019s manufactured topography warmed the air, helped air masses converge and likely triggered updrafts \u2014 all of which can bolster precipitation. The city\u2019s wide use of pavement and other concrete surfaces also exacerbated flooding. The combined effect of these things caused a 21-fold increase in the risk of substantial flooding in some areas of the city, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>These results along with Patricola and Wehner\u2019s fall in line with the growing literature showing climate change significantly increased Hurricane Harvey\u2019s rainfall.
