{"id":8135,"date":"2019-09-13T23:50:37","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T06:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=8135"},"modified":"2019-09-15T04:12:10","modified_gmt":"2019-09-15T11:12:10","slug":"post1-69","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=8135","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Olympic organizations face multiple investigations by Justice Department, state attorneys general&#8221;, The Washington Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"teaser-content\">\n<section>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">By Will Hobson, September 13, 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating several American Olympic sports organizations \u2014 including the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming and USA Taekwondo \u2014 for their handling of allegations of sexual abuse committed by coaches and officials as well as for possible financial wrongdoing, according to several people with knowledge of the investigations.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"remainder-content\">\n<section>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">Separately, the attorneys general in California and Indiana also have opened investigations into Olympic sports organizations that do business in those states, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post and people with knowledge of the probes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">More than 18 months after the sentencing hearing of serial pedophile and former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar sparked national outrage \u2014 and with preparations ramping up for Team USA athletes in advance of next year\u2019s Summer Olympics in Tokyo \u2014 the various\u00a0investigations demonstrate that fallout from the Nassar scandal is perhaps far from over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">The investigations, <a title=\"www.wsj.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/doj-investigating-sex-abuse-within-olympic-organizations-11568384974?mod=djemalertNEWS\">first reported Friday by the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, date to at least last year, when the Nassar case prompted several congressional inquiries into how Nassar was able to avoid justice for so long and also into the broader issue of sex abuse in Olympic sports. A grand jury has been convened in D.C., and in recent months elite swimmers, gymnasts and taekwondo athletes have testified, according to these people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter. Federal authorities also have requested documents from the USOPC and the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a nonprofit that opened in 2017 to investigate allegations of sexual abuse in Olympic sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">\u201cEvery instance related to potential or actual abuse of athletes warrants thorough investigation,\u201d USOPC spokesman Mark Jones said. \u201cWe have cooperated with all government inquiries and will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs hide-for-print ma-0 mb-md interstitial italic\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/every-six-weeks-for-more-than-36-years-when-will-sex-abuse-in-olympic-sports-end\/2017\/11\/17\/286ae804-c88d-11e7-8321-481fd63f174d_story.html?tid=lk_interstitial_manual_8\">Every six weeks for more than 36 years: When will sex abuse in Olympic sports end?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">A spokesman for the Center for SafeSport, in a statement, wrote: \u201cWhile the issues being investigated likely predate the US Center for SafeSport, we understand the Department\u2019s interest in the independent Center\u2019s mission and how it addresses sexual misconduct .\u2009.\u2009. we are providing information when it\u2019s requested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">An FBI spokeswoman and a Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">Federal prosecutors from D.C. have traveled to Indiana multiple times this year to interview people with knowledge of several Olympic sports organizations based there, including USA Gymnastics and USA Track and Field, according to people familiar with the discussions. Investigators with the IRS have participated in these interviews, according to these people, along with officials from the Indiana Attorney General\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">USA Gymnastics and USA Track and Field, like most Olympic sports organizations, are incorporated as nonprofits and are subject to oversight by both the IRS and attorneys general offices in the states where they operate. While investigators\u2019 areas of interest in the sex abuse-related lines of inquiry are relatively clear \u2014 who at various Olympic organizations knew what, and when, about Nassar and others suspected of abuse, and if they cooperated with previous investigations and Congress \u2014 the financial areas of interest in these investigations are unclear.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cb bg-offwhite mt-xxs pad-top-md pad-bottom-md mb-lg ml-neg-gutter mr-neg-gutter mr-auto-ns ml-auto-ns dn db-ns\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">\u201cUSA Gymnastics is striving to become an athlete-centric organization that keeps athlete safety and well-being at the forefront of everything it does,\u201d the organization said in a statement. \u201cUSA Gymnastics has cooperated fully with any governmental investigation and will continue to do so in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">USA Track and Field officials did not immediately reply to a request to comment Friday, nor did officials with the IRS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">The Office of the Indiana Attorney General issued a statement saying its investigation into USA Gymnastics is ongoing: \u201cThe Attorney General continues to monitor and participate in the bankruptcy proceedings involving USAG and as updates are appropriate will release further information. With regard to USA Track and Field, we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">Separately, the California Attorney General\u2019s Office has requested documents from USA Swimming relating to more than a dozen coaches and officials the organization banned for suspected sexual misconduct, according to internal USA Swimming emails from April reviewed by The Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">Among the former USA Swimming coaches the California Attorney General\u2019s Office has asked about, according to the emails, was Sean Hutchison, a prominent coach <a title=\"www.google.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjSnMmz1c7kAhVB11kKHdsbCVQQFjAAegQIARAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fsports%2Fariana-kukors-olympic-swimmer-accuses-coach-sean-hutchison-of-sexual-abuse%2F2018%2F02%2F08%2F446a3fc6-0cd2-11e8-8b0d-891602206fb7_story.html&amp;usg=AOvVaw1i2VNN89TeACVWDLdH7qOE&amp;tid=lk_inline_manual_23\">accused of sexual abuse last year by former Olympic swimmer Ariana Kukors<\/a> . Hutchison has denied these allegations and said he had a consensual relationship with Kukors when she was 23 and he was 41. Kukors has sued USA Swimming over her alleged abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs hide-for-print ma-0 mb-md interstitial italic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/congresswoman-says-usoc-has-failed-proposes-bill-that-could-initiate-an-overhaul\/2019\/06\/17\/42742512-912c-11e9-b570-6416efdc0803_story.html?tid=lk_interstitial_manual_24\">Congresswoman says USOC \u2018has failed,\u2019 proposes bill that could initiate an overhaul<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">A USA Swimming spokeswoman deferred questions about this investigation to the California Attorney General\u2019s Office, which did not immediately reply to a request to comment Friday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cb bg-offwhite mt-xxs pad-top-md pad-bottom-md mb-lg ml-neg-gutter mr-neg-gutter mr-auto-ns ml-auto-ns dn db-ns\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">USA Taekwondo \u2014 like many Olympic sports organizations, headquartered in Colorado \u2014 has been accused by several former elite female athletes in lawsuits of ignoring allegations of abuse made against brothers Jean and Steven Lopez. Jean Lopez, a former USA Taekwondo coach, and Steven Lopez, a two-time Olympic champion in the sport, have denied the allegations, which have not resulted in any criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">\u201cWhile we are limited in what we can say while legal proceedings move forward, we want to state clearly that above all else, our top priority at USA Taekwondo is the safety of our athletes,\u201d Steve McNally, executive director for USA Taekwondo, wrote in a statement. \u201cWe believe that abusive or predatory behavior has no place in our sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">The news of several seemingly overlapping federal and state investigations \u2014 one person who has spoken with investigators termed it \u201ca feeding frenzy\u201d \u2014 was greeted with celebration by lawyers for abuse victims.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cb bg-offwhite mt-xxs pad-top-md pad-bottom-md mb-lg ml-neg-gutter mr-neg-gutter mr-auto-ns ml-auto-ns dn db-ns\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">\u201cThe US Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, the FBI, their senior executives and others who enabled Larry Nassar\u2019s abuse of our Olympic athletes and hundreds of other young girls must be brought to justice,\u201d said John Manly, attorney for hundreds of alleged Nassar victims. \u201cI am convinced that this investigation only happened because of the courage of survivors, publicly revealing the pain and suffering caused by their abuse to Congress, in court and in the media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-xs color-gray-darkest ma-0 pad-bottom-md undefined\">Manly\u2019s criticism of the FBI refers to that agency\u2019s response to several complaints by elite gymnasts about Nassar touching them improperly starting in July 2015. Nassar continued to work with elite young gymnasts and children through his job at Michigan State University until August 2016, when Rachael Denhollander, a victim from years prior, filed a complaint with local law enforcement in Michigan and told her story to the Indianapolis Star.
