Photograph: BBC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"content__article-body from-content-api js-article__body\" data-test-id=\"article-review-body\">\n<p>Prince Andrew is facing a transatlantic backlash over his extraordinary defence of his friendship with <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> after lawyers who represent 10 of the billionaire predator\u2019s victims branded the royal unrepentant and implausible and demanded that he speak to the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>After the royal\u2019s defiant <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/newsnight\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Newsnight<\/a> interview on Saturday triggered a disbelieving reaction from the public and the media, the prince was under growing pressure from critics in the UK and US on Sunday who demanded an apology for his conduct and said that his defence of his actions was simply not credible.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria Allred, who has worked on numerous high-profile sexual harassment cases and is now representing five of Epstein\u2019s victims, told the Guardian: \u201cThe right and honourable action for <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/prince-andrew\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Prince Andrew<\/a> to take now is for him to volunteer to be interviewed by the FBI and prosecutors for the southern district of New York [who are continuing to investigate sex-trafficking allegations against Epstein despite his death in prison in August].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrince Andrew has decided to enter the court of public opinion with this interview and people can decide whether to believe him or not. The most important part of this is the victims and very little was said about them in this interview. They were almost completely ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles-based lawyer Lisa Bloom, who represents another five victims, told the Guardian that Andrew\u2019s intervention fell far short of ending questions over his relationship with Epstein.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|fluid\" data-phablet=\"1,1|2,2|300,197|300,250|300,274|620,350|550,310|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|300,274|620,1|620,350|550,310|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"COrn3f2n8-UCFc8CrQYdKKkMqQ\">\n<p>\u201cPrince Andrew\u2019s interview was deeply disappointing,\u201d Bloom \u2013 who is Allred\u2019s daughter \u2013 told the Guardian. \u201cHe is entitled to deny allegations and defend himself. But where is his apology for being so closely associated with one of history\u2019s most prolific paedophiles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Andrew said he had been <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/nov\/16\/prince-andrew-denies-sex-with-teenager-as-at-home-after-pizza-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">in Pizza Express in Woking on the day of his alleged meeting with accuser Virginia Giuffre<\/a>; claimed a condition linked to the Falklands war that prevented him from sweating undermined her story; and described Epstein\u2019s history of paedophilia as \u201cunbecoming\u201d but refused to express regret for their friendship.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>On a day of escalating difficulty for the prince:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bullet\">\u2022<\/span> Former royal press officers and PR experts described his <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/nov\/16\/top-lawyer-calls-prince-andrew-bbc-interview-catastrophic-error\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">appearance<\/a> as \u201cexcruciating\u201d and \u201carrogant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bullet\">\u2022<\/span> It emerged that a key PR adviser brought in to help salvage Andrew\u2019s reputation had left after just weeks in the job and only a fortnight before the interview was broadcast after he advised the prince against it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bullet\">\u2022<\/span> The Guardian learned that after filming of the interview concluded, Andrew had been pleased enough with how it had gone that he gave the Newsnight team a tour of Buckingham Palace.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bullet\">\u2022<\/span> The students\u2019 union at Huddersfield University, where Andrew is chancellor, unanimously backed a motion demanding that he resign from the post.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bullet\">\u2022<\/span> Sources in the prince\u2019s private office insisted that he stood by the interview and believed he had dealt with the issues with \u201chonesty and humility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The two lawyers\u2019 interventions echoed posts on the Twitter account of Giuffre (formerly Roberts), who has claimed that Epstein and his \u201cfixer\u201d Ghislaine Maxwell forced her to have sex with Andrew when she was 17 \u2013 allegations Andrew has always vehemently denied.<\/p>\n<p>While she has not directly commented on the weekend\u2019s revelations, she retweeted numerous messages that were scathing of Andrew\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>During the interview, the prince repeatedly said he had no recollection of ever meeting Giuffre or having his picture taken with her, despite the existence of an image of them together that has been widely circulated.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, he said he would remember if he had had sex with her, because it is a \u201cpositive act\u201d for a man, and denied he had.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, her lawyer, Jack Sarcola, said that talking to the media \u201cdidn\u2019t cut it\u201d and that Andrew should give an interview under oath.<\/p>\n<p>Allred said her clients had willingly spoken with investigators but she declined, under attorney-client privilege, to say if any had mentioned Prince Andrew.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cPrince Andrew said he would follow the advice of his lawyers, but if he has nothing to hide, and he has committed no crime, why doesn\u2019t he just make the decision to share what he does know about Mr <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/nov\/16\/prince-andrew-believed-staying-with-jeffrey-epstein-right-thing-to-do\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Epstein<\/a>, his close associates and employees with the FBI? Why does he need a lawyer to tell him to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bloom \u2013 who has battled to regain her credibility as a sexual harassment lawyer after she worked with Harvey Weinstein \u2013 pointed out that Andrew had said he did not regret his friendship with Epstein \u201cbecause of the people he met\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saying that some answers were \u201csimply not credible\u201d, she added: \u201cThe lengthy interview lacked any statement that he joins all decent people in being appalled and revolted by what we now know about Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s predatory behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scathing US verdict on the interview came as the prince faced further criticism in the UK. Former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter told the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/bbc\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">BBC<\/a> \u201cany sensible-thinking person in the PR business would have thrown their hands up in horror\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the interview was \u201cnot so much a car crash but an articulated lorry crash\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, businesses and charities were under growing pressure to review their links to the prince and his pitch@palace initiative for entrepreneurs, which stages events at Buckingham Palace and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays, KMPG, Standard Chartered and the Stelios Foundation are all listed as <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchatpalace.com\/supporters\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">partners of Pitch@Palace<\/a>, which links tech entrepreneurs to people who can help their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone associated with organisations with Andrew\u2019s patronages should at least review their involvement,\u201d said Catherine Mayer, a royal biographer who is also president and co-founder of the Women\u2019s Equality Party (WEP).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the case of the MeToo movement, the men who were identified reacted not with any genuine contrition but by seeking to portray themselves as victims themselves. In doing so they always erase the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the charity sector, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) took the step on Twitter of repeatedly responding to questions about \u201cdropping\u201d the prince as a patron by pointing out that his role as patron of its <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.warc.com\/content\/paywall\/article\/ipa\/nspcc_full_stop_campaign_together_we_will_end_cruelty_to_children\/27431\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Full Stop <\/a>campaign, which sought to draw attention to child abuse as an issue, ended in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the students\u2019 union at the University of Huddersfield will on Monday discuss pushing for him to resign as chancellor after there was unanimous support for <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huddersfield.su\/thestudentvoice\/lobby-prince-andrew-to-resign-as-university-chancellor-3ca7\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a motion<\/a> stating that they \u201cshould not be represented by a man with ties to organised child sexual exploitation and assault\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The university itself issued a statement pointing to the prince\u2019s previous denial and lauding him for taking a keen interest in its work and describing his \u201centhusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship\u201d as \u201ca natural fit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2019\/nov\/17\/prince-andrew-calls-for-royal-to-say-sorry-and-speak-to-fbi\">The Guardian<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawyers for Epstein\u2019s victims say they were \u2018almost completely ignored\u2019 in interview Edward Helmore in New York, Ben Quinn and Jim Waterson, London,\u00a0Sun 17 Nov 2019 Lawyers say that Prince Andrew\u2019s Newsnight interview \u2018ignored victims\u2019.
