{"id":8815,"date":"2019-12-13T23:06:22","date_gmt":"2019-12-14T07:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=8815"},"modified":"2019-12-27T05:42:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T13:42:46","slug":"post4-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=8815","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Election result: 52% of votes go to pro-referendum parties despite decisive victory for the Tories&#8221;, The Independent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lizzy Buchan, Political Correspondent, London, December 13, 2109<\/p>\n<p>More than half of voters\u00a0backed pro-<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/referendum\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9245866-\/topic\/referendum\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">referendum<\/a> parties at the polls despite Boris Johnson\u2019s decisive general election victory.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis of election vote share\u00a0reveals nearly 52\u00a0per cent supported parties in favour of a <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/final-say\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9245866-\/topic\/final-say\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Final Say<\/a> vote such as <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9245866-\/topic\/labour\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Labour<\/a>, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the SNP, compared with 47 per cent who supported\u00a0<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9245866-\/topic\/brexit\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Brexit<\/a>-backing parties, such as the Tories and the DUP.<\/p>\n<p>The split in vote share echoes the ratio of the 2016 Brexit referendum, where the Leave campaign scored a victory by 52 per cent to 48 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>It is also likely to reignite the debate about the UK\u2019s electoral system, known as first-past-the-post, which means votes are\u00a0wasted if they do not go to the winning candidate.<\/p>\n<p>After a dramatic night, Mr Johnson hailed the result as an \u201coverwhelming mandate\u201d to deliver Brexit and promised the country there would be closure after the divisive discourse of the past three years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/election-result-conservatives-boris-johnson-tory-majority-brexit-who-won-a9244921.html\" data-vars-item-name=\"related - \/news\/uk\/politics\/election-result-conservatives-boris-johnson-tory-majority-brexit-who-won-a9244921.html\" data-vars-event-id=\"c29\">Brexit to happen within weeks as Johnson wins landslide victory<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Professor Sir John Curtice, who led the team conducting the exit poll, explained that the Brexit picture was\u00a0more complex.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for BBC News, he said: \u201cThe <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/conservatives\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9245866-\/topic\/conservatives\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">Conservatives<\/a>\u2018 success means that Britain will now leave the EU at the end of January. However, it seems unlikely to end the debate about Britain\u2019s relationship with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country\u2019s divisions over Brexit were exposed in the very different swings across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, at 47 per cent, fewer than half of voters backed the Conservatives or the Brexit Party \u2013 the parties in favour of leaving the EU without another referendum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a point to which opponents of Brexit are likely to point in the weeks and months to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK is on course to leave the EU within weeks following Mr Johnson\u2019s victory, fought on the central premise he would \u201cget Brexit done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With an 80-strong Commons majority, the prime minister now has the clout to push his Brexit deal through parliament in good time. Opposition from pro-EU Tories has been wiped out, while Labour suffered a significant defeat at Mr Johnson\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside Downing Street,\u00a0Mr Johnson said it was time for the country to go through a period of \u201cclosure\u201d after a divisive period since the European referendum in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI frankly urge everyone on either side of what are, after three-and-a-half years, a frequently arid argument, I urge everyone to find closure and to let the healing begin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the People\u2019s Vote campaign\u00a0conceded that a second referendum is no longer on the cards after a bruising night for advocates of another poll.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement from the campaign outfit, it said it would \u201crebrand\u201d in the new year to focus on pushing for a \u201cfair deal for Britain\u201d in the Brexit negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe People\u2019s Vote will now refocus its campaign to concentrate on vital social issues that this government must urgently prioritise in its Brexit negotiations,\u201d the campaigners said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/election-result-boris-johnson-pro-brexit-referendum-voters-conservatives-a9245866.html\">The Independent\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lizzy Buchan, Political Correspondent, London, December 13, 2109 More than half of voters\u00a0backed pro-referendum parties at the polls despite Boris Johnson\u2019s decisive general election victory.
