{"id":9154,"date":"2020-01-31T07:05:29","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T15:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9154"},"modified":"2020-01-31T07:08:08","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T15:08:08","slug":"coronavirus-who-declares-global-health-emergency-deutche-welle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9154","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Coronavirus: WHO declares global health emergency&#8221;, Deutche Welle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bonn, Jan. 30, 2020<\/p>\n<p><em>The UN&#8217;s health arm said the move was to protect countries with &#8220;weaker health systems.&#8221; However, the WHO also said there was no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0declared the\u00a0coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern.<\/p>\n<p>The health agency described\u00a0the emergency\u00a0as an &#8220;extraordinary event&#8221; as\u00a0other countries are at risk. Therefore\u00a0a coordinated global\u00a0response is required in order to contain a virus that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china-one-dead-from-mysterious-new-virus-dozens-sick\/a-51961831\">broke out in\u00a0the Chinese city of Wuhan three weeks ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO&#8217;s director-general, said: &#8220;The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China but because of what is happening in other countries. The United States on Thursday told Americans not to travel to China. In Germany, the Foreign Ministry has warned against travel to the Hubei province and recommended postponing any nonessential travel to China if possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China sets a &#8216;new standard for outbreak response&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former Ethiopian Health Minister\u00a0was effusive in his praise of how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china-locks-down-city-at-center-of-virus-outbreak\/a-52103638\">China has\u00a0gone about dealing with the crisis<\/a>, describing the country as a benchmark for handling such issues.\u00a0&#8220;In many ways, China is setting a new standard for outbreak response.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Chinese government is to be congratulated for the extraordinary measures it has taken to contain the outbreak, despite the severe social and economic impact those measures are having on the Chinese people,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;We would have seen many more cases outside China by now \u2014\u00a0and probably deaths \u2014\u00a0if it were not for the government\u2019s efforts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He praised China for the speed with which it detected the outbreak, isolated the virus, sequenced the genome and shared it with WHO and other scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll from the new virus currently stands at 212 and the number of reported cases at well over 8,000. It has now infected more people in China than were affected during the outbreak of SARS, a relation\u00a0of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china-angry-over-coronavirus-cartoon-in-danish-newspaper\/a-52196383\">China angry over coronavirus cartoon in Danish newspaper<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>US and S.\u00a0Korea have\u00a0first\u00a0person-to-person cases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The WHO made the global concern declaration after it was revealed that\u00a0eight of the deaths related to the virus had\u00a0occurred outside of the outbreak&#8217;s epicenter, China&#8217;s Hubei province.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the United States and South Korea established\u00a0their first cases of human-to-human\u00a0spread of the viral strain. The man in the US\u00a0is married to a 60-year-old Chicago woman who fell ill\u00a0from the virus after she returned from a trip to Wuhan, Hubei&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n<p>But US President Donald Trump said the government is taking all necessary precautions to stop the outbreak from spreading.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re working very closely with (China) and with a lot of other people and a lot of other countries,&#8221; said Trump at a Michigan rally. &#8220;We think we have it very well under control. At the time\u00a0the death toll was below 50.
