The hospital announced his death at about 3am on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cIn the fight against the pneumonia epidemic of the new coronavirus infection, our hospital\u2019s ophthalmologist, Li Wenliang, was unfortunately infected,\u201d the hospital said on its Twitter-like Weibo account.<\/div>\n<div class=\"details__read-more\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" data-v-587061fd=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div data-v-22ae94a0=\"\" data-v-587061fd=\"\">\n<div data-v-587061fd=\"\" data-v-22ae94a0=\"\">\n<div class=\"details__body body body--next\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\"><\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cHe passed away after all the efforts we\u2019ve taken to resuscitate him. We deeply mourn his passing.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--div content--div methode-html-wrapper\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--iframe content--iframe\" data-v-77bb1695=\"\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\">\n<div id=\"iframe-container\" class=\"isVideo\" data-v-77bb1695=\"\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z_8LnnHMeG4\" width=\"100%\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" data-v-77bb1695=\"\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">In an audio recording shared on social media, Li\u2019s mother said that she and her husband had recovered from the infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--newsletter content--newsletter\" data-v-33e07123=\"\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"subscription align-center subscription--light subscription--article\" data-v-4df5c3b9=\"\" data-v-33e07123=\"\">\n<div class=\"subscription__inner\" data-v-4df5c3b9=\"\">\n<div class=\"subscription__title\" data-v-4df5c3b9=\"\">\u201cWe have just been discharged but our boy didn\u2019t make it,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\"><\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Li\u2019s wife \u2013 who is expecting the couple\u2019s second child in June \u2013 was staying with her own mother and the couple\u2019s five-year-old son, the doctor\u2019s mother said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201c[Li] is a brilliant person and he would always do his duties and never tell lies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">The <em class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\">South China Morning Post<\/em> could not authenticate the recording, and attempts to contact Li\u2019s family were unsuccessful on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">On Thursday night and Friday morning, three rapidly trending social media hashtags \u2013 \u201cThe Wuhan government owes Li Wenliang an apology\u201d, \u201cI want freedom of speech\u201d and \u201cWe want freedom of speech\u201d \u2013 were seen millions of times before they were censored.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Angry comments about the official announcement of his death were also deleted, including one that read: \u201cI\u2019ve learned two phrases: political rescue and performative rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">One social media user wrote: \u201cI cannot continue to scroll through Weibo, I am so disappointed with the country. Photo: AP<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Widely shared obituaries of Li published by Chinese media outlets, including <em class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\">Renwu<\/em> magazine, hailed him as a martyr and an ordinary hero, who loved eating and doting on his family. Li\u2019s Weibo posts suggested a love of gadgets and the Chinese actor and pop star Xiao Zhan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Others posted pictures of candles, Li\u2019s portrait, and a quote from a Caixin interview Li gave in his final days: \u201cA healthy society should not only have one kind of voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Some people shared <em class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\">Do You Hear the People Sing?<\/em>, a song from the musical <em class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\">Les Miserables<\/em> adopted as an anthem by protesters in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">The National Supervisory Commission, China\u2019s highest anti-corruption agency, said in a statement on Friday that it was sending an investigation team to Hubei to look into Li\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Meanwhile, the Wuhan government paid a belated tribute to Li, praising him for his work fighting the outbreak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cWe express our deep condolences and regrets,\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cWe pay tribute to [Li] sticking to the front line in fighting the epidemic, and offer our sincere condolences to his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<div class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--div content--div methode-html-wrapper\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" Sars-like disease that had sickened several patients then quarantined in a hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">The same day, local health authorities confirmed 27 cases of a new type of virus, most of them linked to a seafood market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Li \u2013 along with seven others, including at least three doctors, who shared information about the outbreak \u2013 was summoned by police and forced to sign a letter promising to make no further disclosures about the disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cI was feverish on January 11 and was hospitalised the next day. Back then, the government still insisted that there was no human-to-human transmission, and said none of the medical staff had been infected. I was just confused,\u201d he wrote on January 31.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Li was diagnosed with the coronavirus on Saturday, and shared a photo of the police reprimand letter on Weibo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cThe public security organs hope that you will be able to cooperate with our work, listen to the police\u2019s admonishment, and from now on stop illegal activities,\u201d it said. \u201cAre you able to do this?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">Li responded: \u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\n<p class=\"generic-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-1383d14c=\"\" data-v-4f4b4a91=\"\">\u201cWe hope that you can calmly self-reflect, and sternly admonish you: if you are stubborn and do not repent, and continue with your illegal activities, you will receive legal punishment.
