It also raised questions about whether Trump personally pressured the Justice Department, either directly or indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview with ABC News, Barr fiercely defended his actions and said it had nothing to do with the president. He said he was supportive of Stone\u2019s convictions but thought the sentencing recommendation of seven to nine years was excessive. When news outlets reported the seven to nine year sentencing recommendation last Monday, Barr said he thought it was spin.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"CalloutLink\">\n<div class=\"CalloutLink-item\"><a class=\"AnchorLink CalloutLink-text\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/pelosi-accuses-trump-abusing-power-interfering-roget-stone\/story?id=68962419\" data-track-moduleofclick=\"Callout\" data-track-position=\"6\" data-track-ctatext=\"MORE-Pelosi-accuses-Trump-of-abusing-power-by-interfering-in-Roger-Stone-case\">MORE: Pelosi accuses Trump of abusing power by interfering in Roger Stone case<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Barr said he told his staff that night that the Justice Department has to amend its recommendation. Hours later, the president tweeted that it was \u201chorrible and very unfair\u201d and that \u201cthe real crimes were on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannot allow this miscarriage of justice!\u201d Trump tweeted.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The blowback from such an unprecedented move by the Justice Department leadership was immediate, both internally among the rank-and-file and in Congress. The entire four-man DOJ prosecution team withdrew from the case, and one prosecutor resigned from the Justice Department entirely. Sen. Lindsey Graham, chair of the Judiciary Committee that oversees the Justice Department and one of Trump\u2019s closest allies on Capitol Hill, said the president should not have tweeted about an ongoing case.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department, while led by a president appointee and Cabinet member, is tasked with enforcing the law and defending the interests of the U.S. without political influence.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"CalloutLink\">\n<div class=\"CalloutLink-item\"><a class=\"AnchorLink CalloutLink-text\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/timeline-extraordinary-turn-events-roger-stone-case\/story?id=68921601\" data-track-moduleofclick=\"Callout\" data-track-position=\"8\" data-track-ctatext=\"MORE-A-timeline-of-the-extraordinary-turn-of-events-in-the-Roger-Stone-case\">MORE: A timeline of the extraordinary turn of events in the Roger Stone case<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Barr said Trump\u2019s middle-of-the-night tweet put him in a bad position. He insists he had already discussed with staff that the sentencing recommendation was too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you go forward with what you think is the right decision or do you pull back because of the tweet? Well, I have a problem with some of, some of the tweets. As I said at my confirmation hearing, I think the essential role of the attorney general is to keep law enforcement, the criminal process sacrosanct to make sure there is no political interference in it. Trump on Wednesday said he was \u201cnot concerned about anything\u201d about the resignations at the Justice Department and suggested the prosecutors \u201cshould go back to school and learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations to Attorney General Bill Barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought,\u201d Trump tweeted this week, after all prosecutors assigned to the case quit.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly come under fire for trying to influence the Justice Department, including forcing out his first attorney general, Jeff Sessions, in 2018 after Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation. Early in his presidency, Trump also encouraged then-FBI Director James Comey to drop a probe into Michael Flynn, Trump\u2019s former national security adviser, according to a memo Comey wrote at the time.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"CalloutLink\">\n<div class=\"CalloutLink-item\"><a class=\"AnchorLink CalloutLink-text\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/attorney-general-jeff-sessions-resigns-trumps-request\/story?id=59037350\" data-track-moduleofclick=\"Callout\" data-track-position=\"15\" data-track-ctatext=\"MORE-Attorney-General-Jeff-Sessions-fired-by-President-Trump-leaving-Mueller-probe-in-new-hands\">MORE: Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired by President Trump, leaving Mueller probe in new hands<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked earlier this week if he would pardon Stone, Trump said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to talk about that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"InlineElement InlineElement--full-width InlineImage\">\n<figure class=\"Image aspect-ratio--parent InlineImage--image\">\n<div class=\"Image__Wrapper aspect-ratio--auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/s.abcnews.com\/images\/US\/william-barr-interview-04-abc-jc-200213_hpMain_16x9_992.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-mptype=\"image\" \/><\/div><figcaption>\n<div class=\"InlineImage--caption\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage--source-meta\">Attorney General William Barr speaks to ABC News&#8217; Pierre Thomas during an interview on Feb. 13, 2020.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Barr told ABC that he would object if ever asked to use his power at the Justice Department to achieve political means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf (Trump) were to say, \u2018Go investigate somebody because&#8217;\u2014and you sense it\u2019s because they\u2019re a political opponent, then the attorney general shouldn\u2019t carry that out, wouldn\u2019t carry that out,\u201d Barr said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"CalloutLink\">\n<div class=\"CalloutLink-item\"><a class=\"AnchorLink CalloutLink-text\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/william-barr-trumps-attorney-general\/story?id=59661840\" data-track-moduleofclick=\"Callout\" data-track-position=\"17\" data-track-ctatext=\"MORE-William-Barr-Everything-you-need-to-know-about-Trumps-controversial-attorney-general\">MORE: William Barr: Everything you need to know about Trump&#8217;s controversial attorney general<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked if he expects the president to react to his criticism of the tweets, Barr said: \u201cI hope he will react.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd respect it?\u201d ABC\u2019s Thomas asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Barr said.<\/p>\n<p>Senior level White House sources insisted to ABC News that the president and top aides were unaware of Barr\u2019s intentions in the interview and were informed of the content only just before it aired.<\/p>\n<p>About two hours after the interview aired, the White House issued a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President wasn\u2019t bothered by the comments at all and he has the right, just like any American citizen, to publicly offer his opinions. President Trump uses social media very effectively to fight for the American people against injustices in our country, including the fake news. The President has full faith and confidence in Attorney General Barr to do his job and uphold the law,\u201d White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said.<\/p>\n<p>In an indication of how unusual the circumstances are, Chief Judge of the D.C. District Court Beryl A. Howell issued a rare statement about how the court makes sentencing decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Judges of this Court base their sentencing decisions on careful consideration of the actual record in the case before them; the applicable sentencing guidelines and statutory factors; the submissions of the parties, the Probation Office and victims; and their own judgment and experience.
