It has processed more than 4,000 people leaving Iran.<\/p>\n<p>But video footage from inside, passed to the BBC earlier this week, shows crowded and squalid conditions, with people sharing tents instead of being individually isolated.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1459C\/production\/_111365338_8b26ed55-2d78-4c1c-9d4b-66a7bac44b76.jpg\" alt=\"Taftan camp - people sharing tent\" width=\"976\" height=\"599\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Squalor at the Taftan camp appears to be fuelling the spread of coronavirus<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many of those held at the camp are furious. One told the BBC that &#8220;instead of preventing coronavirus, this is spreading it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of Pakistan&#8217;s roughly 400 cases have emerged from the camp in Taftan. And a lack of testing at the site means they have only been detected when sent to secondary quarantine facilities in their home provinces.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1104\/production\/_111365340_4c12f66c-3f38-4abf-8d80-390c125e41b4.jpg\" alt=\"Crowds at Taftan\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Iran&#8217;s virus emergency has forced Pakistan to rapidly quarantine people at Taftan<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Murtaza Wahab, an adviser to the chief minister in Sindh province, which has received the bulk of infected people from Taftan, told the BBC the situation at the camp was &#8220;alarming&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But he added the steps taken to quarantine those from Taftan for a second time would prevent them coming into contact with the wider public.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in charge of the Taftan camp told the BBC improvements were now being made.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Afghan returnees<\/h2>\n<p>Concern is also rising in Iran&#8217;s other eastern neighbour Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of Afghan migrant workers and refugees have been streaming back into western Afghanistan in recent days.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/5F24\/production\/_111365342_cbbd8646-5aba-444b-94b2-495434572e17.jpg\" alt=\"Afghan border camp, western Herat, crowded with returnees\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Herat province is struggling to cope with thousands of Afghans returning from Iran<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Checks for the virus are in place, but one official acknowledged it was &#8220;inevitable&#8221; that the number of infections in the country would rise.<\/p>\n<p>In Pakistan and Afghanistan, medical professionals warn the already weak healthcare systems will struggle to cope with a major outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>So far the number of confirmed cases has been comparatively low, with just 22 in Afghanistan, but the number of tests carried out in both countries is also much smaller than elsewhere, and the true figures could be much higher.<\/p>\n<p>One doctor in Pakistan pointed to how hospitals in far more advanced countries such as Italy had been overwhelmed by coronavirus, so if a similar situation developed in Pakistan, he asked: &#8220;What could we do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-51966125\">BBC News<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Secunder Kermani, Islamabad, 20 March 2020 Celebrations of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, come at a grim time.
