{"id":9583,"date":"2020-04-06T21:45:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T04:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9583"},"modified":"2020-04-07T05:39:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T12:39:48","slug":"post2-79","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9583","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;In the slums of Rio, communities have to choose between hunger and coronavirus&#8221;, ABC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Aicha El Hammar Castano, Rio De Janeiro, April 6, 2020<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I stay at home, I will die of starvation,&#8221; one street seller said.<\/p>\n<p>RIO DE JANEIRO &#8212; Many of the 1.5 million people living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro have been forced into making heartbreaking decisions as the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/Coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">novel coronavirus<\/a> threatens their very survival.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebc.com.br\/instituto-data-favela\" target=\"_blank\">Data Favela research institute<\/a>, 70% of families living in Brazil\u2019s slums, known as favelas, have already experienced a drop in income due to the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The institute&#8217;s research was based on interviews with more than 1,000 residents in 262 communities across Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is so strange, this virus has been brought by the riches[t] from holiday,&#8221; Vinicius Magalhaes, a 67-year-old who makes his living selling sunglasses in the streets of Leblon, one of the richest neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, told ABC News. &#8220;What can I do except working? She performs pedicures and manicures in a salon in a commercial gallery which closed three weeks ago after all non-essential stores were ordered to shutter their doors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I don&#8217;t work, I don&#8217;t earn money. She leaves her house to attend to a few regular customers at their homes in the south zone of Rio. Last week, Edith only made 120 reais (around $20), just enough to buy rice for her family and to buy her transportation tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Renato Meirelles, the founder of DataFavela, told ABC News that it is very different to be confined in a house with a full range of amenities versus the cramped conditions in a favela.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"CalloutLink\">\n<div class=\"CalloutLink-item\"><a class=\"AnchorLink CalloutLink-text\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/coronavirus-pandemic-authoritarians-world-opportunity-crack\/story?id=69795910\" data-track-moduleofclick=\"Callout\" data-track-position=\"4\" data-track-ctatext=\"MORE-In-coronavirus-pandemic-authoritarians-around-the-world-see-opportunity-to-crack-down\">MORE: In coronavirus pandemic, authoritarians around the world see opportunity to crack down<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The types of behavior displayed by Edith, he added, poses a further risk as she could bring back the virus to her community.<\/p>\n<p>Meirelles said the government should subsidize incomes during the pandemic in order to avoid social chaos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If people are hungry and do not receive support it could turn very bad. People could just start robbing to eat. We are convinced of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Jair Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has minimized the impact of the coronavirus. He has repeatedly called for Brazilians to resume economic activity, describing the virus as a &#8220;small cold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For many Brazilians the choice is stark \u2013 either sickness or poverty.
