{"id":9682,"date":"2020-04-20T23:40:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T06:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9682"},"modified":"2020-04-21T07:04:03","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T14:04:03","slug":"post2-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9682","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;A 5-year-old Detroit girl dies of COVID-19, becoming the first child to die in Michigan&#8221;, Detroit Free Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tesa Baldas and Keith Matheny, Apr 21, 2020<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">DETROIT \u2013 A 5-year-old Detroit girl has died of the novel coronavirus, becoming the first child in the state\u00a0to die of the pathogen that has now infected more than <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3arzSGD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">31,000 Michiganders and claimed the lives of 2,391.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The victim is\u00a0Skylar Herbert, who on Sunday became\u00a0the youngest person in Michigan to die of COVID-19, according to Michigan Health Department\u00a0statistics.\u00a0Up until now,\u00a0the state&#8217;s youngest victim was\u00a020;\u00a0the oldest 107, with the average age being 73.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Beaumont Hospital confirmed Skylar&#8217;s death late Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;The loss of a child, at any time, under any circumstances, is a tragedy,&#8221; Beaumont said in a statement. &#8220;We are heartbroken that COVID-19 has taken the life of a child. She died on Sunday at Royal Oak Beaumont after spending two weeks on a ventilator.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-news-national-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CPKHpuTW-egCFQp-YgodvoMLsw\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe decided to take her off the ventilator today because her improvement had stopped, the doctors told us that it was possible she was brain dead, and we basically just knew she wasn\u2019t coming back to us,\u201d LaVondria Herbert, Skylar&#8217;s mother, told the Detroit News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The girl&#8217;s mom is a Detroit police officer; her a father a firefighter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Both are now desperately hoping for a cure so that other parents don&#8217;t have to lose a child as they did.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-news-national-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CN3louTW-egCFQp-YgodvoMLsw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/usatoday\/native-article_link\/news\/national_1__container__\">\n<div class=\"tlod\">\n<div class=\"tl_ut usatoday_article_mid\">\n<div class=\"usatoday_article_mid_container\">\n<div class=\"usatoday_article_mid_textcontent\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\u201cShe was the type of girl that would just run up to you and jump in your arms and hug you,&#8221; LaVondria told the News.\u00a0&#8220;It didn\u2019t matter what she was doing, she would stop what she was doing and tell me she loved me like 20 times a day.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan called Skylar&#8217;s death one of\u00a0 the &#8220;saddest&#8221;\u00a0 moments\u00a0in the city&#8217;s ongoing fight with COVID-19.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\">\n<div class=\"label\" hidden=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"message\">\n<div class=\"title\">Get the <span class=\"highlight\">Coronavirus Watch<\/span> newsletter in your inbox.<\/div>\n<p class=\"description\">Stay safe and informed with updates on the spread of the coronavirus<\/p>\n<p class=\"description\">\u00a0&#8220;We have had a number of sad days here since the coronavirus has hit this country, but this is one of the saddest.
