{"id":9729,"date":"2020-04-22T23:35:16","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T06:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9729"},"modified":"2020-04-23T02:20:47","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T09:20:47","slug":"post2-83","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9729","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Coronavirus lockdowns have led to an unprecedented fall in air pollution for these major cities&#8221;, CNBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sam Meredith, Sustainable Energy, Apr 22, 2020<\/p>\n<p>KEY POINTS<\/p>\n<div class=\"RenderKeyPoints-list\">\n<div class=\"group\">\n<ul>\n<li>IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality technology company, compared measurements of the world\u2019s deadliest air pollutants before and during the Covid-19 outbreak in 10 major cities across the globe.<\/li>\n<li>The findings, published Wednesday on Earth Day, revealed a \u201cdrastic drop\u201d in air pollution for almost all of the cities under lockdown when compared with a year earlier.<\/li>\n<li>New Delhi recorded a 60% fall of PM2.5 compared with 2019 levels, Seoul registered a 54% drop, while the fall in China\u2019s Wuhan came in at 44%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-106500557\" class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed hasBkg\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imagePlaceholder\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageContainer\" tabindex=\"-1\"><picture><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/106500557-1587557390943gettyimages-1210465055.jpeg?v=1587557901&amp;w=678&amp;h=381\" alt=\"GP: Due To Coronavirus Lockdown, Delhi NCR See Clear Blue Skies As Air Pollution Drops 200422 EU\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Clouds hover over the blue sky at India Gate during the lockdown to limit the coronavirus on April 20, 2020 in New Delhi, India.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Mohd Zakir | Hindustan Times via Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Confinement measures imposed to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic have resulted in an unprecedented fall of deadly air pollutants around the world, according to new research published on Earth Day.<\/p>\n<p>IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality technology company, compared measurements of the world\u2019s deadliest air pollutant \u2014 \u201cfine particulate matter\u201d known as PM2.5 \u2014 before and during the Covid-19 outbreak in 10 major cities.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/blog\/air-quality\/report-impact-of-covid-19-on-global-air-quality-earth-day\" target=\"_blank\">published Wednesday<\/a>, revealed a \u201cdrastic drop\u201d in air pollution for almost every city under lockdown when compared with the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi recorded a 60% fall of PM2.5 from 2019 levels, Seoul registered a 54% drop, while the fall in China\u2019s Wuhan came in at 44%.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that Wuhan experienced its cleanest air quality on record through February and March, while Los Angeles experienced its longest-ever stretch of clean air \u2014 meeting the United Nation\u2019s recommended air quality guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The data was based on a three-week time frame to reflect either the most stringent lockdown measures in each city or to coincide with the peak number of daily reported Covid-19 infections.<\/p>\n<p>Major cities with historically higher levels of deadly air pollutants witnessed the most substantial drop in PM2.5, the analysis found.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MidResponsive-midResponsiveContainer\">\n<div id=\"MidResponsive-8\" class=\"\" data-module=\"mps-slot\">\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Two global public health crises<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>PM2.5 is smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter and is widely regarded as the pollutant that poses the greatest threat to health of all commonly measured air pollutants.<\/p>\n<p>Its small size means the particulate matter can penetrate deep into the human respiratory system and the bloodstream, IQAir researchers said, potentially causing a wide range of short- and long-term health effects.<\/p>\n<p>Air pollution is already a global public health crisis. It has created an extraordinary demand shock in energy markets, with mobility brought close to a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>Confinement measures have been implemented in 187 countries or territories in an effort to try to slow the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The IQAir analysis studied the air quality in 10 major global cities under coronavirus lockdown: New Delhi, London, Los Angeles, Milan, Mumbai, New York, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul and Wuhan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Rome bucks the trend for air quality<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>New Delhi regularly tops the world\u2019s most polluted city lists.
