{"id":9813,"date":"2020-05-10T23:50:57","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T06:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9813"},"modified":"2020-05-11T02:07:29","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T09:07:29","slug":"post1-97","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcampaign.net\/?p=9813","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Americans more worried about reopening too quickly than not opening quickly enough, survey says&#8221;, USA Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca Morin, May 8, 2020<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">WASHINGTON \u2013 As states around the <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2020\/05\/07\/coronavirus-live-updates-unemployment-claims-california-donald-trump\/5177378002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">country begin reopening<\/a>, a new survey suggests the majority of Americans\u00a0are more worried about social distancing measures being loosened too quickly than are worried about the country not reopening quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Nearly three out of four Americans \u2014 71% \u2014 say they are more concerned by the government lifting social distancing restrictions too quickly, according to a survey from the Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape Project. That&#8217;s more than double the 29% who say they are worried restrictions are not being lifted quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Even as <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/05\/05\/coronavirus-us-reopening-covid-19-economy\/5173632002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">some experts and medical projections have warned<\/a>\u00a0that coronavirus cases could spike if the country reopens too quickly, about 50% of states have partially reopened or loosened social distancing restrictions that were put in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Other states have maintained stay-at-home orders and other restrictions with an eye on the still-growing number of cases nationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">And few Americans believe it\u2019s safe now for various social distancing restrictions to be scaled back, according to an analysis on Nationscape Insights, a project of Democracy Fund, UCLA, and USA TODAY, while the majority of Americans\u00a0think it won&#8217;t be safe for a combination of weeks or months.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-news-politics-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CKaUgvG5q-kCFQs2fwodhDUJdQ\" data-integralas-id-eb9a2227-df17-431c-58bf-90814ebed535=\"\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">Coronavirus updates:<\/strong><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2020\/05\/07\/coronavirus-live-updates-unemployment-claims-california-donald-trump\/5177378002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">WH reportedly shelved CDC reopening plans, Trump staff to be tested daily<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-news-politics-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CKeUgvG5q-kCFQs2fwodhDUJdQ\" data-integralas-id-f772864e-fd06-4198-91be-318472df0e91=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/usatoday\/native-article_link\/news\/politics_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a tendency for people to focus on people who are very loud right now,&#8221; said Robert Griffin, research director for the Democracy Fund\u00a0Voter Study Group. &#8220;But there&#8217;s &#8230;\u00a0a\u00a0real patience that pervades most of American action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape Project is a large-scale study of the American electorate. Throughout the 2020 election cycle, the researchers aim to conduct 500,000 interviews about policies and the presidential candidates.\u00a0This survey was conducted between April 23 and 29, with 6,708 Americans surveyed. There is a margin of error of plus or minus\u00a02.1 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">US coronavirus map:<\/strong><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/graphics\/2020\/03\/10\/us-coronavirus-map-tracking-united-states-outbreak\/4945223002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Tracking the outbreak<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Griffin said the data suggests that Americans will likely not engage in many activities, like going to restaurants, even if they reopen right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;You can reopen a lot of things, the bars and restaurants can come back, you can try to reopen schools and send kids back to them, you can try to have larger events occurring &#8230;\u00a0for more than 10 people, but this really doesn&#8217;t mean that people are going to necessarily engage in them,&#8221; Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While there have been protests in several states over the social distancing restrictions, the majority of both Democrats (83%) and Republicans (60%) are more worried about social distancing measures being loosened too quickly.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"message\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Only 9% of Americans believe \u201cit is safe now\u201d for schools and universities to reopen. Sixteen percent\u00a0believe it will be safe in several weeks, 42% believe it will be safe in several months and 22% believe it will be safe in six months or more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ten percent of Americans believe it\u2019s\u00a0safe right now to allow meetings or gatherings of more than 10 people, like sporting\u00a0events, concerts, and conferences. Twenty-one percent believe it will be safe in several weeks, 36% believe it will be safe in several months and 23% believe it will be safe in six or more months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">And 10% believe it\u2019s safe right now for businesses like theaters, bars and restaurants to reopen. But 26% believe it will be safe in several weeks, 35% believe it will be safe in several months, and 17% believe it will be safe in six or more months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2020\/05\/07\/coronavirus-elderly-dependents-dont-get-stimulus-check\/3058653001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Among those who won&#8217;t get a coronavirus check: Older Americans claimed as dependents<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In addition, 14% of Americans believe it\u2019s safe right now to end stay-at-home\u00a0orders, which encourage\u00a0people to stay at their residences and avoid socializing with others. Thirty-five percent believe it won&#8217;t be safe to lift those\u00a0orders for several weeks, 30% believe it won&#8217;t be safe for several months and 12% believe it won&#8217;t be safe to lift until six or more months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Griffin noted that people who say it will be safe in a couple weeks or months like want\u00a0&#8220;to be optimistic in the scenario.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;No one is having a good time with the many restrictions that are occurring in American life right now,&#8221; Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2020\/05\/07\/small-businesses-battle-insurers-over-coronavirus-coverage\/5176986002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Coronavirus business interruption battle pits business lobby against itself<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/nation\/2020\/04\/16\/coronavirus-pandemic-stay-home-orders-draw-protests-covid-19\/5143622002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Protesters have taken to the streets<\/a> in several states to call for an end of the stay at home orders, with many supporters wearing clothing or holding signs in\u00a0support of President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But even as the majority of Democrats and Republicans believe it is not safe yet to loosen restrictions, there is still some partisan divide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The largest gap between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to specific activities is in regard\u00a0to stay-at-home orders, with 24% of Republicans saying they are safe to end,\u00a0compared with 6% of Democrats. But the majority \u2014\u00a0a combined\u00a069% of Republicans and 84% of Democrats \u2014 do not believe it will be safe to end the orders for either several weeks, several months or six or more months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The breakdown between Republicans and Democrats for the other activities include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul\">\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">17% of Republicans who believe it\u2019s safe for businesses like theaters, bars and restaurants to reopen, compared with only 5% of Democrats.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">16% of Republicans who believe it\u2019s safe to allow gatherings of more than 10 people, compared with 5% of Democrats.<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">15% of Republicans who\u00a0believe it\u2019s safe for schools and universities to reopen, compared with 4% of Democrats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2020\/05\/08\/survey-most-americans-worried-country-reopen-too-quickly\/5180069002\/\">USA Today<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca Morin, May 8, 2020 WASHINGTON \u2013 As states around the country begin reopening, a new survey suggests the majority of Americans\u00a0are more worried about social distancing measures being loosened too quickly than are worried about the country not reopening quickly enough.
